The main thing to think about when getting a dog is how much space you have! Should you get a large dog or a small dog! Well do you have a large yard or a small yard! Do you have alot of time to spent with the dog! Border Colies for example are very high energy dogs and need alot of walking and excersise!
Getting a dog is not just as easy as going to the store and getting one you have to do some research and figure out what breed of dog is best for you.
Hope this helps

Research, research, research! Do not rely on the opinions of others. The dog breed that is right for you depends on many variable specific to your family, situation, and expectations. Things you will want to consider during your decision making process include:
Appearance:
Activity level:
Dominance:
Intelligence/Trainability:
Size/Space:
I like border collies because they are tractable, active, and bond strongly. However, they drive some people crazy because they are too active, can demonstrate fearfulness or aggression, and can outsmart some owners.
I also recommend that you consider adopting a rescue dog. Most rescues can give you a lot of information about the temperament and particular behaviors of the individual dog that you are adopting. This helps ensure that you are getting the dog that fits you well even within the breed. Finally, consider an older dog that needs a home. This is particularly good for young people. A list of rescues near you can be found by entering your zip code into www.petfinder.com

Getting a dog at Christmas is the worst time to get a puppy but if you REALLY want one please read to see why it might not be the best time. you will be really busy with family and presents and going over to people's houses. The puppy's first week has to be all about him, watching him sitting beside him ALL day, potty training and making him comfortable in his new home. You have to remember that you have taken her away from her mom and sister's and brothers and brought him into a strange environment you have to be his relaxing caregiver in quiet safe environment where he can adjust and with people over and gifts and all the other things it is not going to be all about him. Plus all your cousins etc will want to play with him and he will want to be alone trying not to hyperventilate. if you still really want one and are fully comitted here are the ones I like=)if you want a big dog I'd get a lab or golden retriever and if you want a small dog I'd get a maltese or maybe a pomeranian, i like these dogs but they might not be for you=) Do alot of reserch you have to know how big it will get, if the breed is agressive(if you have a cat it has to get along) How much excersise it needs, how much it will cost, if ANYONE you know has an allergy, does your whole family like the dog, are you planning on moving, do you want a long hair or short hair, how much time can you spend gromming, how playful do you want it, how energetic, does need to live outside or inside, how much will it be left alone, do you have siblings and do you want it to be a companion, herding, sporting/hunting, guard dog ect.
In the end pick a dog that is good for your family and one that you like after all it is your dog, love it alot and it will love you=)

get a dog that suits you. If you live in an apartment, don't get a big breed dog, they need space. Good apartment dog would be a any from the toy group to a medium sized dog. Don't get a herdin dog dog, they will tend to herd ur children if you have any. Labs are great dogs however, but you might want to consider a small one for the time being. Go to local shelter and pick out a dog that way if ur mom gets u a dog because then that way you can get a dog that fits ur life style

THe best answer that I can give you is try to research the type of dog you want because each breed is different, just because I like one breed does not mean that you will like that breed, you may even hate that breed. Find out what you want in a dog and find what breeds meet those wants. Make sure that you take your time to ensure that you find the type of dog you want or you will most likely be sending that poor dog to the pound.

Don't get a pure bred. Go to a local shelter and pick up a dog or puppy that needs a home. Save it from being euthanized rather than buy a dog that could easily get a home.

You have a TON of research to do before you get a dog. You need to evaluate your life style and research the breeds before you decide.

If you want a small breed, get a Maltese, but if you want a large breed, get a Gordon Setter.
