Exactly what the name suggest; nothing should be able to penetrate it. You can have hardware firewall or software firewall. Basically firewall is looking on the stream of data and filters it according to prescribed formula. Firewall also closes the unnecessary ports, so they can't be use by someone training to get to your PC. Only the known ports remain open. Good firewall also makes your PC sort of invisible to the outside world, so if someone is probing ports, they will appear as nothing is there (black hole) Keep in mind that firewall configured by default will probably prevent you from playing many games, and run some other programs over the internet, since they require not just one but two specific ports to be open. You can configure your firewall to forward these ports, so you can play. Have fun.

A Firewall for pc's is metaphorically similar to the
firewalls built between apartments and townhouses.
The purpose being to prevent a fire that started in
apt a from spreading further to apt b and c, etc.
It shields your pc from intruders and gives you
control over who and what get's in or out of your
pc / network.
You don't won't to be without one - ever - if your
computer's connected to the Internet.
If you don't have one - do it quickly.
It is very risky to be online without firewall, antivirus, and antispyware protection in place.
I used http://www.computerprotectionsystems.com successfully.

To scan all the files on your system for viruses and malware.. Also can be configured to monitor all incoming ports. Some can be configured to scan for spyware. Internet security usually comes with the firewall to monitor all port 80 input/output in depth..

To separate traffic from an internal set of hosts from the general internet. The best practice is to disallow everything as a default and allow only the things you expect.

It acts like a gate for your computer and the internet. Your computer is sending and receiving information constantly, the firewal 'filters' all of that information and detects any unwanted intrusions or attacks, sometimes it stops them, sometimes not.
