Her mother and bhabhi also gave us some money as a shagun, but now we our mind have changed, and dont wanna marry her due to a long journey distance from my district to her district.we are hindu. we have refused them . i wanna know that whether they can force us legally or not to marry. in this case no other ceremony was performed and we dint ever go to her place, they once came my home but we didnt go her place? i would like to know that can any complaint be lodged against us if they want to make a dowry seeking case?i belong from INDIA.

Many intelligent people are giving legal advices in this forum about which they no nothing but its up to the person concerned who has to judge what is the correct legal advice for his querry. You are concerned with your getting implemented in a wrong Dowry case by refusing the girl to marry. Lets check if any such refusal by you amounts to seeking dowry for the said marriagee or not. According to The Dowry Prohibition Act,1961 Dowry means any property or valuable security given or agreed to be given either directly or indirectly at or before or after the marriage as consideration for the marriag of the parties. Putting this definition in your case first of all there was no settlement of marriage as such not even we can call it Rooka as we call in North India where we keep the bride or groom in waiting till the actual engagement what really happened in your case was only SHAGUN given as a mark of respect to this lady by your ladies from your side & to you by ladies of their side. Even if you call this Rooka ceremony it is of no significance as in such ceremony nothing is settled between the parties as both bride & groom are kept in waiting for further decision. Secondly the question of giving or taking properties or valuables usually come during the time of actual engagement when two families finalise the bride & groom for the marriage. Any dowry talk comes into picture only at that time but this never happened in your case. So the question of asking dowry by you in consideration for the marriage does not arise. Such cases get registered only where some marriage activities have already started such as engagement i.e. Shagun ceremony or chunni ceremony or even the actual marriage ceremony where such ceremonies get blocked for the demand of Dowry or Dowry is demanded at the time of vidai/dolli or after all such activities when bride is already in her in laws house. So dont worry no harm will occure to you on this account & you can always give all these facts even if any wrong case is made out against you which I doubt will take place as no one is prepared to bring his/her unmarried girl in a wrong case keping in mind her future.

I don't know what to tell you on this except I feel sorry for you. Here in the good ole USA we choose who, when, where and why we want to marry someone. We don't buy a wife or a husband. We marry because we meet someone, fall in love and then mutually decide to get married. I have always wondered how people in countries like yours are ever happy with life if they can't even choose their mate. Well I wish you luck.

dude its ure wish what to do. but boss u dont have a valid reason to disapprove of the marriage. u and ure family should have thhought of the distance gap before blessing her with the shagun. please try and understand i hope u r not ruining it. it isnt easy for her to get engaged soon. talk it out dont be rough. if u have a genuine reason break off ure word then go and explain ure counterparts. just that we live in a male dominated society we cant kick off women. respect women dude. be a gentleman and apologise to them if u cant keep ure word so that the gurl and her family can maintain their social values and it will be easy for her to get someone soon.

Ok, lets get it right...so you didnt want to marry this girl because you asked her family for dowry and they have what you asked for?? Well, let me tell you something mr idiot....if dowry was the reason you rejected her than you are just a slimy poop and you will never ever get married.

well they cant but they can i mean it depends on how nice the girls parents are if they are very nice u are very lucky because hopefully they will get over it, but if they are not nice not at all u are in for it. they will take u on a roller-coaster ride and that is not nice. let me tell u now. hopefully god is on your side then u will not have any troubles.

postpone the marriage... until you know what you want.
Keep postponing, the people involved may get the message you're not, just now, that hot about the marriage...
