Cats are so territorial, they'll probably be freaking out with all the strange scents and loud sounds... we're keeping the re-model area sealed off but it will be five weeks of construction. Thanks for any insights!

Place kitty with her litter tray, food and water in a room far away from where all the construction is going on. When the workers have left for the day, allow kitty to explore the all the new things in your home. When the workers return, place kitty back in her safe room...:)

Keeping them sealed off in rooms that will not be worked on is the right idea. They'll probably hide while all the noise is going on anyway. You could try spending a little extra time with them to reassure them, and if the construction hasn't started yet try keeping them in those rooms for a bit before it does so it isn't this huge transition all at once.
If they manage to escape and are too freaked out to come when you call put some salmon in a pan, cover with water, bring to a low simmer until they come home. It usually takes about 30 minutes for 'cat soup' to bring every cat in the entire neighborhood onto my deck. I'm usually using a salmon head or backbone, but just a piece of salmon will do fine.

If your cats are anything like mine, they'll hide for the first two days then get increasingly curious. Once they realize they can't get to the remodelling area, they'll calm down and go back to normal. They'll probably be more prone to hiding from strangers, if you have other people doing the remodelling, because they'll associate strange people with loud noises. That'll pass in time.

Be sure the area is well secured. Cats can get into just about anything as I'm sure you are aware -- and they are almost certain to go through a curious phase during the remodel. There will be lots of thing there that can hurt them or trap them.

Give them lots of love throughout the process so they don't think that you're losing interest in them -- they pick up on things like that quickly and it'll stress them further.

I really think they'll be fine. My cats have consistently done well in situations like this, as long as I kept them out of the walls (long story)! Good luck!

This is a great time to use some Rescue Remedy on them. You can get that at a health foods store for about $15. You can put it in their water bowl and also just put three to four drops on their fur between their ears as many times a day as you can for the construction period.

Feliway is much more expensive and is more effective when there are problems with the relationships between cats. The RR will cover their fears of the noise and disruption in their lives.

I would set up an area for them that is as far away from the construction as possible. Give them a room to themselves if possible. Put whatever favorite toys, bedding etc in there maybe a radio or tv to drown out some of the noise.Try spending some extra time with them. The down time with you will relax your pets and you. It will be a place for them to feel safe and be somewhat anxiety free. And make things seem a little more familiar and normal to them.

spend more time with your cats, give them something to occupy them. oh, and try to put more scents around your house, so then your cats can check those scents out BEFORE they want to check the construction area out
P.S.- try some catnip, that always works !

Put the cat in the opposite part of the house and close the door if you can to minimuze noise.

those gloves work very well for dogs, i dont remember if i ever used them on a cat or not, but their cheap (not more than 5 bucks) and you can get them at walmart usually. worth a try. the brush i use now is one of those flat wide ones with lots of short little metal bristles on it, and it works very well on my cats and dogs. good for short hair anyhow, i have a golden retriever and i have to use a wide toothed brush because his hair is so thick and long. but if you have a tabby and calico, those are not long haired cats, so you should be fine using it.just dont use it if they have a sore or scab on them, as it can irritate the skin and cause it to bleed. brushing regularly to get loose hair before its on your carpet is the best way to control shedding. youre not actually controlling it, but your controlling where most of it ends up, anyhow, lol. good luck!!

You can buy synthetic cat facial pheromones that are supposed to help calm them in stressful situations.

It's sold under the trade name "Feliway".

Your best bet might be to take them to a logging place for cats, or take them to a family member/neighbor that way you can be with them and won't have to worry about them.
