Religion is a lot of things to different people. I guess some could use it as a form of self-medication. For some it's the ultimate Ego Stroke. Examples: "I am chosen." or "I am saved".

Sure it is. "Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes" ("Religion is the opiate of the masses"): Karl Marx. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.

Bertrand Russell said: "Religion in any shape or form is regarded as pernicious and deliberate falsehood, spread and encouraged by rulers and clerics in their own interests, since it is easier to control over the ignorant." in "Wisdom of the West"

John Courtney Murray: " it is history, not God, that makes the nature of man".

The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions. The criticism of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo.

Yes. Isn't it interesting that drug, sex and all other addicts find Jesus to kick their habit, only to become addicted to Jesus?
