A promise ring or friendship ring is a ring given to a boyfriend or girlfriend, to promise to be committed in a serious relationship, usually a precursor to marriage. These indicate that serious courting is under-way. It can be given as a symbol that a couple does not feel that it is an appropriate time to consider engagement or marriage but are serious about each other and their relationship.

A promise ring can be worn on any finger on the left or right hand, although ring fingers are far preferred. Most often it is the left ring finger, but due to engagement confusion, the right ring finger is finding acceptance in today's world.
Some people judge the seriousness of a promise ring by its value and by the size of its gem. Most promise rings as marketed by jewelers are less valuable than traditional engagement rings, with smaller gems.
Also in some cases, but not all, a promise ring may take the place of an engagement ring in the most serious of relationships among young people. This is often because one or both of the partners are either too young to legally be wed under the law or unwilling/unable to receive legal waivers, required due to status as a minor/dependent, from their respective parents and/or guardians.
I hope this helps!

Here's my opinion of a promise ring... It's a cop-out, it means the guy doesn't want to commit to marriage right now and is trying to buy more time. Note, if you're young this answer doesn't really apply, it's kind of sweet to do the promise ring thing if you're at an age that's too young to get married.

It is a symbol of a promise that two people will be together and, for all intents and purposes, is an engagement ring, only with a little less committment than an engagement ring. Also, the ring itself is much smaller and much less expensive.

It is the same as a pre-engagement ring.....just a committment to one day in the next three years or so if things work out to give an engagement ring.

It can be whatever y ou want it to be! Most people get them because they are to young to be married or something to that effect but they are promising one another that the will be married someday....my boyfriend of two years bought me one in August. It is very simply white gold band with a small diamond on the top. It is beautiful and still makes me cry when I think about it. He told m e it symbolized his promise not only to marry me one day (we were 18 at the time), but to love me, take care of me, protect me, and make me happy for the rest of our lives! It was so romantic...we were at his family's cabin alone sitting out on the dock at sunset....

It's your promise to your significant other that you promise to be with him/her and that you love them. It's a promise of a future with the other person. You can purchase them anywhere...I've even seen them sold at Target for pretty cheap. It looks like a single diamond solitaire. It's usually pretty small although it can be big if you choose.
