this is only what i've read up on:
Satanism is the belief in indulgence rather than abstinence
they also believe in 'an eye for an eye' but they don't go around harming other people (unless they feel they were harmed first)

Church of Satan would be like a Church of Christ, but with Satan

note: Satanism is not the same as devil-worship

LaVeyan Satanism does not actually believe in the biblical Satan but rather view Satan as a symbol of strong egoism. It does not have a God per se but believes the function of God is in the believer themself. Contrary to what most third rate literature and fundamentalist cranks would have you belive Satanism is not about maiming animals and performing cruelty.

In the 9th and 10th Satanic Rules of The Earth it specifically states "Do not harm little children." and "Do not kill non-human animals unless attacked or for your food". In the 3rd it states "When in another man's lair, show him respect or else do not go there".

The big misconception about Satanism is that they worship Satan. They do not. They do not even believe in Satan. The reason it is called Satanism, is basically because it's the opposite of Christianity. Christians believe in God, Satan, Heaven, and Hell. The opposite of that would be not to believe in any of those things. Satanism is about self-indulgence, and being your own god. Doing what feels right for you unless it brings harm to other people, unless neccessary.

Satanism is the practice of worshipping the Christian concept of Satan as divine or inspired being.

The Church of Satan was founded by Anton Levay in 1966. Church of Satan members do not believe in Satan as a real being, rather they see "Satan" as man's animalistic and primal urges. They believe that most religions control their followers by forcing them to supress these urges. The expression, "Do what thou wilt" is sometimes used to sum up Church beliefs. The Satanic Bible (written by Levay) teaches members to do whatever they please, so long as they do not hurt anyone else in the process. The church doctrine does include supposed magical rites and rituals, but not all members subscribe to witchcraft.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Actually the church of Satan could also be called the church of atheism. They use satan as a symbol, but they do not believe in God or Satan. They believe in "if it feels good do it" type of mentallity.
