Just purchased a puppy (mini dachshund) for $900. It's from reputable breeder. Is this too much?

That depends in my mind.....for a dog that is not going to be in shows and is just for a friend, I wouldn't pay that much. There are many dogs that need homes. But if you are going to show the dog then you have to have a show quality dog and they can be very expensive.

Any dog from any reputable breeder will cost anywhere from $700-over 1000. So $900 is probably normal, I just hope you got papers and some kind of health guarentee. Some breeders also offer that if you ever decide you cannot take care of the dog anymore (job transfer, etc) that they will take the dog back no charge so it does not end up in a shelter somwhere.

I got one last night from a reputable breeder. I paid $150. She already has her distemper and first shots at 8 weeks old. I'm located in Joplin, MO. :)
I'd never pay more than $200, they're cute and stuff but why pay so much more for what you can purchase for elss by shopping around and making offers. Make sure you don't OK shipping with anyone until you see recent photos btw, some breeders steal pics online and say they have a puppy when they don't.
Good luck finding a bundle of joy, ours is fantastic!

Do you think it is too much? I dont know about prices for Dachsunds but I know that yorkies go for 1200-1500 in Oklahoma. I would say that you probably paid a good price if it is from a good breeder and the dog is healthy, but all the dogs I've ever owned have been mutts so I dont know much about purebreds. Hope your puppy is a good dog and have a good holiday season.

I donated a couple hundred pounds of dog and cat food. When I adopted my Border Collie. He was a rescue animal that needed a home. There is too many abused animals that need a home. I could, but never would pay 900 bucks for a dog. When Wilber lives out his life in his home. I will bring home another rescue dog.

If your new puppy is from a reputable breeder with some excellent titles behind the sire and dam, then no, it's not too much to pay. If it's some back yard breeder charging higher prices to seem reputable, then you got scammed.

Depends on your area and the bloodlines and quality of the pup.
If this is a show or hopefully show quality pup then it was a cheap buy and you get a really good deal.
Much of the price of dogs depends on what area you live in and what people can get for them in that area.
Here in the midwest in a rural area I see papered border collies and cattle dogs and pyrenes go for $100 up to around $400 all the time. Other places they get much more for them.

I'd say no---$900.00 isn't too much to pay for a pure bred dog. As long as the dog has official papers stating it is a pure bred and it comes from a reputable breeder, they can choose to sell it for any price. My friend recently bought a Great Dane and paid close to $1,500.00 for it. Just make sure that you've received everything from the breeder that you were entitled to---breed certification papers, up-to-date veterinary vaccine/medical procedures records and a spaying/neutering record if the dog is of age to be spayed or neutered. Enjoy your new pup!! :)

Here's my opinion: yes it is.
There are so many people, around the world and in your backyard, who are malnourished or hungry. Not only that, but there are so many puppies and dogs (cute ones too) in shelters. You could have saved one's life instead.
Plus, are you a purebred who can trace their own ancestory back 10 generations or so? Most PEOPLE cannot, why subject animals to this?

But it sounds as if you've already adopted this pet, so I hope you can enjoy him/her!
p.s. I looked online, and the average price seems to be about $600, for one with champaign parentage. But I know a few people who have paid about $1000 for a puppy with a healthy bloodline.

If it is from a reputable breeder, no. You generally pay more because of the better care and better health of the parents (it cost more to buy expensive parents than to buy cheap parents, but you generally get healthier offspring from their breedings). Also, if the puppy is a rare color it is probably a good price.
