When you go to your barber to get it cut short, why not ask your barber how to start waving up your hair. He may suggest that you just start wearing a du-rag and buy you a natural, boar-bristle hair brush. My son is also mixed and the way I develop his waves is by doing that and applying a little bit of Black Magic Wave Pomade into his hair. But I strongly suggest asking your barber. Good luck.....

You could try a "perm", but any time people do anything with chemicals to their hair they take the chance they'll end up with some hair disaster they never would have seen coming.

You could also try using styling mousse and kind of shaping waves into it with your hands.

Why not just find the most attractive hair-cut for your non-wavy hair and just go with that. When all is said and done, the best thing for most people is to make the most of whatever shine or healthiness their hair has rather than trying to make it do something it doesn't naturally do.
