Since four of the guests are gay is it ok to turn a stool upside down so they have a place to sit?

It's perfectly OK to do this. I, myself, have done it many times; the main drawback being the caps at the ends of the legs.
Something you may want to consider is whether the stool is backless or not. If there is a back on the stool, it will sit at an angle if turned upside down: make sure the taller guests take the back legs.
