I know very few people who hit their dogs to teach them as this realy, if ever, works.
There are pads you can use that you can buy at petsmart or other pet stores, they have a scent that makes the dog want to urinate there. If you want him to pee outside you can just try to have him out as much as possible, but this doesnt really "teach" him it just kind of makes it convenient so it works out, but then you run into problems if you are away for a length of time and he is stuck inside.
The best way to make it work is if you catch the dog going to the bathroom where you dont want him to move him to the spot you want him to go.
If you find the dogs pee somewhere after he has gone, pushing his face in it and tellling him he is bad will absolutely not work.
For some dogs, if you pick up their urine or defication and put it in the spot that you want them to be going in then they will begin to go there.
Teaching will take some time, and you need to be patient, losing your temper and hitting or yelling will do nothing but slow the process.

There is a much, much better way. First look at what you'll need:

1. A puppy :)

2. A crate

3. Plenty of toys

4. Optionally puppy diapers to wear indoors.

The key is to take the puppy out immediately after drinking and eating and waiting at the spot. It may take up to half an hour, so you're going to need patience. You can say words like "pee" or "poop" so later they can associate the word with it and urinate or deficate on command! When you get results, praise them. The crate is a home to the dog, like their room. Let the dog get comfortable with it. At the beginning you can just put something disposable in it, like newspapers, unless you have the puppy diapers. Then you can put in the blanket. The puppy should sleep there every night. Keep lots of toys in there too. A dog will not mess where he sleeps and eats.

During the day, keep the puppy in the crate, making sure the toys keep her busy. Soon the pup will understand crate time is also fun time. Every three hours or so, take the puppy out of the crate to go to the bathroom (if the dog didn't make it, just shorten the time between potty breaks). When the dog did the business, put her back in the crate. If you wish, put in different toys.

If the puppy was outside of the crate and messed in the house, don't punish, especially if you didn't catch the dog. The dog would either take to peeing behind your back or won't understand why she's being punished. Just clean up with newspapers, making sure to use a product that eliminates pet odors. If the puppy smells that she's went there, she's going to go again. Keep some of the soiled newspapers though. This can be used to your advantage.

Place some newspapers (with some of the soiled in the pile) on the spot where the dog peed. If the dog goes again, hurrah! Every day or so, move the papers slightly toward the door, inch by inch, until they are by the door. When the dog comes toward the papers, quickly take him outside. With the papers there, the dog may eventually learn to sit by the door when he has to pee.

Good luck with your new puppy!

Start by rewarding him when he pees outside. Praise him with lots of enthusiasm, pet him, give him a treat. Always be consistent, and he'll catch on quickly. He'll learn soon that outside is the place to be when he has to go.

Once that's working half-way well, start rewarding him only when he's in the general area of where you want him to go. If that's the far back corner of the yard, then only reward him when he's within 30-40 feet of that spot. (And if you have a small back yard, that can be 20 feet if that's what it takes).

Finally, when that's working, only reward him when he's in the spot you want him to use.

Again, always be consistent. When he's going where you want even if you just open the door and let him out, reward him. After awhile, you can skip a potty break or two, but still give him a treat or a reward now and then to keep reinforcing this behavior.

Do not hit your dog. When you know he has to pee, take him to his spot. Stay right there until he goes. WHen he does go in the right spot, give him a small treat. We built a sand pit (outside) with kids play sand. When we got our puppy, we would take her there and watch over her unti she went. She learned in less than a week, that this is where she is to go to the bathroom. She would get so excited becasuse she would get a piece or two of kibble. It's all about posititve reinforcement.

I also highly recommend reading Ian Dunbar's books on crate training.

I trained my the way I was taught by a champion breeder of Papillon. Put your puppy on a leash take him out for the designated area that you want him to pee. Tell him GO POTTY and wait few minutes. If he did praise him, if not put him back inside and put him in his kennel after half hour do the same thing again till he did it. If he does not do it, put him back to his kennel but he did it, praise him and take his leash off you can then wait for 2 hours and do the same thing again. It takes time but it is rewarding and you will both be very happy.

If a pound dog, ask the volunteers. If buying one, ask the breeder. If the breeder doesn't have good advice, go elsewhere!
The way that has worked for me is to take it out often and to the same spot each time. Good for you that you choose not to abuse your dog because "you" aren't trained in puppy care yet. Not meant as an insult in any way.
Good luck!

I agree with the first answer. Crate training is the easiest and most effective. Look it up on the internet. You should also becareful not to make your dog think that pooping is a bad thing by punishing her when she does it in the wrong place otherwise she/he will just learn to try and hide it from you. Just use crate training and lots of praise when she does it right... good luck

to find out how long your puppy can hold it use this formula:
take your dogs age(in months)and add 1.Thats how long your dog can hold it in hours.
EX:2 month old puppy can hold it for 3 hours
But dogs wont go 100 times in the same spot. You have to switch around.
say you pee here for a week then go to another spot for a week
after the second week is over,go to the first place

GOOD LUCK!

Right! Bravo! Don't use physical violence!

Get lots of books from the library, about potty training puppies. Tip: Don't train him on newspapers, he'll probably think then, that he is supposed to, and you'll not read your newspaper half the time.

Once again, go to the library. Excellent resources.

we bought those pee pads like you use for bed wetters, we put in in one spot and everytime the dog would look like it was fixing to go potty we would run and carry it to that spot. It worked! Even if it had an accident we would carry to the accident spot and say NO! and then carry it to the pee pad and set it down there.
