It's all historical. We, the English, have been at war with France for hundreds of years, in one form or another. Last major one was with your tin-pot dictator, Napoleon. Who tried, unsuccessfully, imposing his views on the rest of Europe.
Most recently, your capitulation against the Germans still give us a sense of one-upmanship, because we alone held out.
And you eat frogs, and smell of garlic!

Dear Olive, I am French.
Asking this question is a bit pointless as you'll get answers from people who really like the French, and from people who hate them.
The same would happen if an American or an English person (but more true if s/he was American) asked the same question on the French Yahoo!
And I don't agree with the other French person who answered: true, there are a lot of stupid French people who would just be rude, but overall, we do answer questions that are asked by English speakers, and in a nice way.
Something I was wondering: do we really smell like garlic? I mean, garlic is mainly used in the South, not in the North of France. And we don't eat it that much (although we should as it's very good for you). Of course, if you eat an "aïoli"...

I am French and I lived many years among English people in Saudi Arabia. I can honestly say that I saw these people everyday, men and woman, and they did not like me because I was the only French among them. I was very unhappy especially the English women who were very jealous of me on all grounds and the men were irrespecfull towards me. There is definitely an antipathy from English towards the French.
Smile.

They do n't like the fact that they speak French...most English people think everyone should speak English but they themselves can't be bothered to learn even a few basic phrases in another language. They seem to think that speaking slowly and loudly in English will do the trick...which is why so many nationalities dislike the English.
P.S. Your English is infinitely better than their French

You said "Peoples" so I guess you mean Americans, Australians, New Zealanders, etc too.
So here is just one American's opinion:
French language - enchanting and melodious.
French food - best in the world. Wines and cheeses included.
French culture: fashion, arts, etc - head and shoulders above everyone the rest of the world.
French attitudes - conceited and haughty. But I think that is mostly Paris.
French bravery - non-existent ever since so many casualties in WW I. Frankly, I think intestinal fortitude was eliminated from the French gene pool during WW I. I love you but I feel sorry for you.
If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything.

Like when you have a strike you mean and a lot of British lorry drivers are injured and financially ruined. You know, when you set fire to their trucks and you pulled their cargo out onto the road. Or when your heavy handed ignorant customs officers get hold of somebody totally innocent and scare the living daylights out of them. It could be the flies on your meat in the markets, or it could be the mega rip off prices you charge for a beer. It may also have something to do with the fact that you allow so many illegal immigrants through your borders who find their way into our country. And lastly the pungent aroma of garlic. There are many who do not like garlic. That's about all I can think of right now. Still it takes all kinds to make the world go round so to show no hard feelings, Have a very happy Christmas and a prosperous new year.

Because the French have better food, are more chic and (in part of the country anyway) have better weather. When France beats England in rugby too with a score of 31-6 (as happened this year)it then becomes impossible for the English to like them!
Il s'agit de la jalousie!

Well I think it is a question that can be asked either way - the groups that dont like the other usually base it on history or ignorant habits - I think when you go to the working class of either country you find the most ignorance of this kind but it is not as pronouned or obvious as you go into the higher levels of society whether british or french. I love French women myself

Here is another Frenchie, used to Yahoo Q/A in French ...
I find all of you quite kind to French people, in fact ... One of you asking the same in France would be at least ignored ... but most certainly treated as a stranger, having nothing to do with us ... This is not my opinion, only what I already noticed ...
So thank you to all of you ...
By the way, what about forgetting about the past and living a friendly present? OK, I admit we would surely take advantage in forgetting your glorious past and our past shames ... But one day, we will have to get together as a united Human kind (even if such a friendship seem unbelievable with other people at the moment) ...
Merry Xmas ...
