I picked up a lovely bible at a yard sale and I would like to give it to my sister for Christmas. It is called "The Devotional Bible -- New Century Version" and is edited by Max Lucado.
Are any of you familiar with it, and would you recommend it? She is non-denominational, but a member of an extremely evangelical born-again church.
(I do *not* need to hear: "burn it, flush it," etc. -- I am an atheist but my opinion on the book itself is immaterial; it is a gift for someone for whom it would be useful.)
Any input would be appreciated!

I am giving it *to* my sister. She was not imaginary, last I checked. As I said, my opinion on the book is immaterial.

I LOVE MINE!!! It's awesome! I have one that I keep in my car (small one) and I use the large one at home and for Bible Study! I love using a translation instead of a paraphrased Bible and this one is right up my alley.
I highly recommend it. It's easy to read, totally easy to understand and I love the editing notes.
There's one that is completely awesome, it's the introduction to the book of John...(4th book of the New Testament). WOW! I also love that it has pages that are for a specific study...and in the margins, the "gist" of the chapter and how to not only apply it but other Scriptures to look over for exploration.
Wow...she will be blessed by your gift.

Max Lucado has a very good reputation as a Christian writer. A lot of Christians like to have several copies of the bible so that they can compare and contrast between the different versions. That particular one has both the scriptures and devotional passages to help understand what the scripture means.

Max Lucado is a very respected, very much appreciated Evangelical writer. Any devotional Bible edited by him will be appreciated by your sister, I'm sure. (Most Evangelical believers would be very happy to have it). And I'm sure she will specially appreciate that you, as a non-believer, made that special effort.
EDIT:
If I worked in English, I would surely own one.
I don't believe Max Lucado "makes a fortune" from his writings as someone above has said, although I suppose that would be alright if he did.
Someone suggested to you "King James Version only" - there are very few people who still think that way. I doubt that any growing Evangelical church would share his views. Most Evangelicals consider it to be a practically idolatrous view, believing a 16th century translation was the only one that had value.

The new century version is very updated language. It is more story like than most. For a devotional it is a pretty good idea. While you may be an atheist perhaps you should check out one of the devotional items and see what it is like. If it seems trite and plattitudeness, she may not like it. (although some evangelicals really go for that stuff).
Another option would be to talk to one of her friends who is a believer and ask them what they think of it.
I think it is a good gift and I believe your sister would be touched given that you do not share her faith. It is very thoughtful.

Yes, that would be a nice gift for her. Max Lucado is a very popular Christian writer that is loved by many and the New Centruy Version is easy to read. I think she will like it.

I know little about this Bible but I think if it comes from you it will be cherished by her. I see nothing in looking it up that scares me. It is a paraphrase but that isn't really so bad there are a lot of paraphrase bibles that are very good. Not only that but I'll bet your sister will be able to see what is correct and what isn't without someone to hold her hand... I think giving it to her will show her that you love and respect her... I've never heard of a "New Century" version of the bible, but I've heard of Max Lucado, and he makes a fortune out of writing inspirational books. Take that for what you feel it's worth.

The Bible may not be her church's text, but if she is non-denominational and would appreciate a nicely crafted Bible, why not? If it's a gift from the heart (and if you saw it and thought of her, it is), and you think it is something she would like, I suggest you do it. You know her. I don't.

I don't own the version you're describing, but the three I do own are not that different from one another. Basically, a Bible is a Bible.
Merry Christmas!
