Huge fun. If you can, get a reasonable sized motorhome, for comfort. NZ is perfect for a road holiday, and two months is the perfect time to see it in. Go in at AKL & out CHC or vice-versa. If u are returning it to the same depot u collected it from, ask them to sharpen the rate heavily once they quote u, as u will have 2 ferry crossings to pay for, and the motor home company wont have to worry about relocating their machine. I would recommend February mArch as the best time to travel, schools are back, weathers great, water is warm. Im setting up a motorhome supply company these holidays, I may be able to help if you wish. pm me if u wish

My husband and I did this a number of years back with 3 small children in tow. It was the best holiday ever. I would allow at least 6 weeks to see the place properly. If you go down the West Coast be sure to fuel up as some of the supposed towns are really only someones letter box, so the fuel stops are far between. And the caravan park at I think it was Greymouth or Grey something is right beside a cemetery so if that bother you try to schedule the trip so you don't arrive there at 9pm at night and then decided to drive on like we did. We didn't have time to do the Bay of Islands but my mother just did and said it was just amazing. Trekking on the glacier is a highlight and Queenstown is just fanastic. It is well worth doing and the roads are very easy to navigate.

It depends on how old you are. If you are over 30, I would definitely suggest the camper van. Otherwise, you will surely have more fun staying in youth hostels. You will get to meet many people (both travelers and locals) that will add to your trip as well as provide you with tons of useful inside information on the best spots to see that you won't get from the iSites. You can get a decent car that will last 2months plus for around NZ$500, so even with hostel costs, it will still end up being cheaper than renting. Good luck with whatever you decide. I'm sure you'll have a blast. You can never take too many pictures!

It's possibly the best way to see this country. But be aware that a lot of visitors who drive motor homes here have accidents. It's probably mostly those from countries where thay drive on the right and countries like the Netherlands where there are no dirt roads. So drive on the left and drive for the road conditions. You're allowed to camp in most places by the side of the road.
