Hi, I have been diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder. I have taken every antidepressant under the sun due to previous misdiagnosis of depression (I only went to the doctor for meds when I was depressed, when I was in a manic state I wouldn't go). The antidepressants actually make me more crazy. Anyways I used to take E, valium, weed, have taken oxycontin and dilaudid's a few times too. I have been drug free for almost 3 years. I had been taking Paxil (which is similiar to Zoloft) at the same time as I was doing E. I think one of the main problems with taking E when you are a depressed individual or have tendencies toward this are that you don't make or process serotonin the same way a nondepressed person does. E apparently makes your body release tons of serotonin and endorphins, etc all at once in bursts and that's why you feel sooooooo good, touchy, feely, lovey. Your brain only has a certain amount of these chemicals in your body naturally, so once they are gone, they are gone. So since you would already be lacking in serotonin, from what I gather you would basically be using what you have up very quickly. So when you are older, technically you would be more extremely depressed. I kept thinking, "Oh my God, what if I keep doing E and become an old person so extremely severly depressed and emotionless?" I thought about how hard it is right now to deal with a mental illness, let alone multiply it by a hundred. I also read that E erodes your spine. Gross. Just like how meth puts holes in your brain. The drugs were fun, but not worth dying for. Good luck and I hope I helped at least some.

There are many things these medications are used for. Depression, anxiety, and OCD, as mentioned by other answerers, are common uses. However, they can also be used for a number of non-psychiatric conditions, such as migraine prevention, chronic pain, and premenstrual syndrome, to name just a few.
