Im making a prime rib roast can i keep a metal thermometer in it while its in the oven roasting?

no. not unless it's made to stay in the oven and those are usually digital. If it's just one of those metal kinds with the temp on the top, then no. It will burst. You open the oven insert the thermometer and take th ereading. If it needs to cook more then take the thermometer out put the roast back in and cook some more.

That's not the way to use a meat thermometer. Take the meat out periodically and insert the thermometer into it. Leave for a few seconds until the reading stops and the temperature is static. If you left it in the oven you would get the temperature of the oven, not the meat. You'd probably destroy it too.

Yes. Pulling the thermometer out of the roast will leave a hole where the juices can come-out (like a geyser).

Yes, you should leave it in. Just be sure to put thermometer in the thickest part of the meat and be sure it's not in direct contact with a bone.

you sure can as long as the thermometer is made to leave in some are not made for that

Make sure it can withstand it. We use to use one at work and we had to check the meat as we cooked it. We could not bake with it in the meat.
