There is a normal range, depending on the person. For an adult, anywhere between 6 hours and 9 hours is quite normal, although most people need approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes per night. A human sleep cycle, for an adult, is approximately 90 minutes in length. Sleeping only part of a cycle usually will not do you much good. So, if you sleep for 7 hours and 30 minutes, that works out to 5 sleep cycles. If, as you suggest, you are on the high end, then you may be getting 9 hours, or 6 sleep cycles. 7 sleep cycles, or 10 hours 30 minutes, on a daily basis, is certainly thought to be dangerous, whereas 9 hours per day is not.
There are reasons that one can need more sleep on a regular basis. If you have SLEEP APNEA, a condition in which your breathing is interrupted during sleep, you will actually wake many times during the night, so you are not sleeping deeply. This is dangerous, and if you have it or think you do, you should have yourself checked by a sleep lab. Ask your doctor about it: It is quite treatable.
If you are too hot at night, that can increase drowsiness, and make it difficult to wake in the morning. Only use enough blankets to stay warm. If you are too warm, take off any socks you are wearing, and put a foot or two out from under the covers. After a few minutes, you will cool off.
If you are feeling bummed out and do not particularly want to face the day, then have an enjoyable thing planned for when you wake up. (Try: A favorite tea or juice, a favorite song on an alarm with a tape player or CD player, a short story you promise yourself you will start as you awaken tomorrow, a chat with a friend, a favorite musical work-out video- even if you just get up and do five minutes, a time of prayer, a shower with a nicely scented fragrance and a spray to match it for the bathroom, or an early morning activity...)
Sleep is an important way that the body recharges itself, the brain commits the events of the previous day to long-term memory, and you get a chance to dream and refresh yourself. If you think that even 7 hours and 30 minutes of sleep is too much, because we are a busy world nowadays and time is precious, remind yourself that efficiency is important, too. Many studies have shown that sleep deprivation lengthens reaction time, increases errors in judgement, and increases careless errors as well. You will be more efficient overall if you do get enough sleep.

The general guideline is 8 hours a day, but I can get by on 4-5 most days with very little difficulty. I've found that if I sleep more than 8 hours a day, I'm wiped out for the rest of the day and want to take a nap... you just have to force yourself to stay awake and keep busy.
Just make sure you don't have a ton of stress in your life (or learn how to handle the stress you do have), eat a sensible and nutritious diet, and drink plenty of water. You can usually get by on less sleep and be more productive.

I'm pretty sure that an adult should get about 8 hours of sleep.
You want to sleep a lot more than that?..hmm. Try getting more active. If you exercies early in the day it'll give your body more energy for the day. Drink lots of cold water to keep yourself awake. Basically just keep yourself busy.
Also, take a multi vitamin. Maybe your body is lacking nutrients and causing you to be tired.
If you really have a problem with wanting to sleep too much, you should see a doctor. Wanting to sleep all the time is a sign of depression.

No more than 8 hrs should be needed, unless one has a very busy/exhausing schedule. Many people can get by on less sleep, but less than 6 hrs is too little to be healthy long term.
Excessive desire to sleep can be a sign of depression or boredom. Are you not eating right? Perhaps your body isn't getting the fuel it needs and so is encouraging to rest because it's out of steam.

the quality of sleep is far more important than the duration. if you have a fairly consistent work schedule you should be able to wake in the morning with out use of an alarm clock.
an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, stresses from environmental factors, work, relationships, etc. all play a role in physical and mental health.
you could be suffering from one of many forms of depression.

7 hours at the least. If you think you're sleeping too much, use and alarm clock. It sucks to get up, but once you're awake, count to three, then force yourself up. If you're wanting to sleep on and off throughout the day, try to drink something with caffiene in it to help you stay awake. Hope this helped. :)
