My little sister (she is 13) is starting to break out in zits. She doesn't want them so badly that she is resorting to washing her face with alchohol to keep them away. Its working, but I dont think it is very good for your skin. So I told her that she can severly mess up her skin if she keeps doing this, but she wont believe me. Is alcohol bad for your face? If it is, what can it do to your face? If she doesnt believe me, then maybe she will believe you guys. She is 9 years younger than me and thinks that because I'm so much older, I dont understand why she is doing this, so she won't listen to me. Please help!? If alcohol is not bad for your face, then I will stop bugging her about it. But if it is, I'm going to stop her before she ruins her face. By the way - our mother does not know that she does this. But I am not telling her because I will not tell my own sisters secrets, and if alcohol rally is bad for your face, I can stop her myself. Please Help!

No, all alcohol will do is clean her skin, not ruin it in anyway. Don't worry, she's fine.

In response to the answer down below about drying out the skin; When you have acne or pimples, your face has too much moisture or oil in it which causes the breakouts, so drying your skin out a bit is NOT a bad thing. In fact, that is how facial cleansers work.

Oh no...alcohol is not meant to be used that way. The only reason it works is because it dries the skin out and kills the bacteria, but if used daily it will ruin your skin. It's far too concentrated to be used for that purpose.

My son is very sensitive and he tried taking a tattoo off his face with an alcohol swab...well his face looked like he had a severe sunburn on it for days afterwards and it stung like crazy.

Your sister should be using products like Neutrogena facial wash...anything with salicic acid (I probably didn't spell that right). That will kill the bacteria. She's better off buying anything in the acne section (those wipes nightly) and the REAL secret is keeping your (dirty) hands off your face and your diet...no CHOCOLATE...no COLA....anything carbonated or with caffeine or cocoa will give you zits big time. Same with fried foods and chips.

You can ask your doctor for a stronger cream if it's really bad. You use it once a night and in a week your skin is clear...but you have to clean it every day, twice a day...don't dry out your skin or you'll have to use moisturizers which will clog your pores and you just have a vicious cycle.

Alcohol is extremely drying. The zits are likely caused by oily skin and dirt in the pores, and the alcohol will clean that away...but it also strips the skin of oils it needs and so the skin may become oilier faster in its attempt to replace what the alcohol took away.

Do some research on some less harsh cleansers for oily skin, that won't be so drying. By using the alcohol she may be compounding the original problem.

The alcohol will dry her face out, but it's not "bad" for her face. Since she is a new teen, she has excess oil, which is why the alcohol is helping her. There are lots of face washing products on the market, and if you read the ingredients you will see they have alcohol in them too. Don't worry. maybe you could help her purchase a nice inexpensive facial cleanser.

Alcohol will clear your face however...it will dry out your skin which in return makes your pores produce more oil and just makes you break out again. A dermatologist told me to always stay away from any products that have alcohol in it for this reason. But then again I guess I would rather have a dry face than a broken out one.

People rub alcohol on themselves before a work-out. If it

was really hazardous, then why was "rubbing alcohol" invented?

One more thing to consider, it's a mild disinfectant and will keep

the bacteria in check. As for dryness, well---that's easily fixed

and doesn't last long anyway. Finally, when you get a shot or I.V.,

what do they use to clean the area?

I have to admit that when I get a pimple, I put alchohol on a q-tip and dab it on the pimple.

Alchohol isnt too bad for your skin...it wont kill her....but it will dry it out quite a bit!!!.....

I guess you could tell her that it'll dry it out, and people with really dry skin tend to get wrinkles b/c all the moisture is sucked from the skin causing it to be less flexable. ....
