I'm a very athletic person - triathlons, marathons - and my friends can't believe that I would consider dating a smoker. I live in San Francisco, which has some of the toughest antismoking laws on the books, so it's generally rare that I meet smokers at all.

My concern is mainly about being around secondhand smoke, since there are mountains of research indicating that secondhand smoke is indeed harmful. It's not even the smell of it that bothers me, it would just be the cumulative effects of being around the smoke. Any opinions? Am I being shallow and rigid in my thinking?

I have always dated smokers in the past, and I didn't mind at the time. But now, I'm with someone who doesn't smoke and it's such a wonderful difference!

Think about what kind of relationship you want with this guy. If it's just a fling, I wouldn't worry about secondhand smoke so much, but if you are thinking long term, then the smoke will be a problem in the long run, especially if you want kids in the future.

I am not a smoker. 1/2 of my friends smoke and most people in my family smoke too. I am very athletic and being around them doesn't hurt. The smell is aggravating but I have bad lungs and one of them has even collasped before. I am more bothered in public when people smoke than when I'm around my family and friends. You are being shallow if you don't want to date someone just because they smoke. That's judging them because of something they do and not who they are. I can understand why you are cautious. If you start dating a smoker, most people will understand that you don't like smoke and don't want to be around it and they'll probably try not to smoke around you like that. Their not going to pressure you into smoking or anything. If smoking turns you off, then don't date them.

Sounds like you already have your mind made up.........stick with your own kind!
FYI: the secondhand smoke crap is all BS.....data that you won't ever see or hear about proves, that a nonsmoker would have to be locked in an airtight room with a smoker and have them smoke a whole pack of cigs for the nonsmoker to receive the same effects as smoking 1 cigarette!!!!

I used to smoke. quit just a few months ago... it's hard to quit... if it were me, i wouldn't even consider dating a smoker right now, because i'd end up smoking again within a couple of days...

now, for you, I don't think it's a problem to be around a smoker... just set a couple of rules... no smoking in the place you live. if you stay at his house, then then same rule applies, even if your not there... i would say, don't sleep at his house at all unless he doesn't smoke in it, and don't let him smoke at your place at all...

IF u like the person for personnality not for the pretty face, try to forget about that person.
Anyway, it would be much better if u dont get married coz when ur children grow, there will be a 90 % chance that they get high and bad cholesterol as well as lots of heart pains.

Also, the smoker ur dating would die early

No. You should not marry a smoker because you will live a sad life. Smokers get black lungs and then they die at very young age. I would know, my mom smokes

You are not shallow or rigid. I would NEVER date a smoker and I'm not athletic like you are. It is gross and harmful. There are plenty of non-smokers out there. There are more of us than there are of them.

Ewww no. Smoking is a very unhealthy and nasty habit. Kissing someone with smoker's breath is just awful.

I did once and it was pretty gross. It is like licking an ashtray whenever we kissed. It tastes nasty even if he has gum or something in his mouth! If you both smoke you probably can't taste it but it is a nasty habit. as long as he doesn't smoke around you, you should be ok if you want to date him.

before she became my wife, she smoked, now she doesn't second hand smoke may effect your health and some people get sick from it. not all people are affected by it cause they avoid the second hand by staying upwind or wait till the smoke is gone.
