I would stick with letting him do bodyweight only exercises until he reaches middle school.

I started lifting when I was 10. Squats with a medicine ball is an excellent choice. If you teach your son proper technique and form, he will only benefit from the exercise. Get him some 5 pound dumbells, a weight belt, a jump rope, and a punching bag.
My 6 and 4 year olds do push-ups and work on the bags. That's it for now but as they get older I will integrate weights.

No problem. I have a 4 year old (almost 5) that watches me exercise and wants to too. I have him doing simple exercises like you described. He does pushups (on his knees), situps, leg lifts, and squats (bodyweight only). Every once in a while, he even uses the treadmill (at a slow speed and I'm there to turn it off if something happens). One thing I don't do is push him to do it. I let him decide if he wants to exercise or not. I don't want him to get turned off of exercising.
I do agree that weights would be too much right now. I think that should wait until at least middle school, then just light weights. Maybe (big maybe) do heavy weights around junior year in high school.

All of those exercises you said are fine, 8 pounds won't hurt him and plus he has more chances of hurting himself on the playground at school. He just wants to spend time with his old man and if he wants to spend it working out, so be it = ). Just don't let him benchpress or do anything where something more than 10 pounds could fall on him. Spot him very well if you do! Happy Holidays!

Why not?
Don't let him strain himself.
Why not check with a local sports trainer or a school coach.
No reason not to encourage workouts.
How much does a dumbbell bar weigh? Can he pack a 10# bag of sugar up the stairs to the kitchen?
Use your common sense.

I was always told to never do certain types of work-outs until I had stopped growing - what involved heavy lifting!
It's a great question to ask your doctor and I'm sure he or she will have a great answer for it and some interesting points.
Medicine balls are quite heavy for an eight-year-old. I personally wouldn't let my child do this, but I might be a little over-protective.

even with each and each of the encouragement you're attending to hotel to drastic punishments, i think of which you have already performed the main suitable element- you moved the medicine so this would possibly not take place back, and you spoke to her approximately your emotions and the no longer ordinary information approximately what could have surpassed off to her. in the adventure that your daughter is a typical, reasonably to blame 8-twelve months-previous, she in all probability understood what you have been attempting to describe to her. the only element that concerns me is which you mentioned you "think of" she took it to purpose to clean up her stuffiness- is that what you think of, or is that what she advised you? If that relatively replaced into her reason, then i could basically enable it pass. yet whilst that's no longer what she advised you, then you definately could desire to speak to her extra and probable take extra action to come to a decision why she did it. you do no longer prefer to anticipate it replaced into for an harmless reason only to make sure later that it replaced into the commencing up of a much bigger undertaking.

Yes, there is no problem with that. That's great that he is getting active with that now. Just don't push him more than he can handle.
