YES they are good pets.
Horsegal may have had some bad experiences but I believe she doesn't know much about the breed.
I have two cockers a male and female and they are LOVABLE and FRIENDLY. They will bark and sound aggressive when strangers come to the door but within about 5 minutes they are fine. Mine also think they are people and not dogs.
If someone has food they become my females best friend. My male may sound aggressive but if a person kneels down he will go to them withing a few minutes. The male will also get in my lap and put his head against my chest for some loving. Once they have met a person and got to know them they will go and try to jump on their laps or try to get attention and it doesn't matter if it is a woman or man.
Yes they are more my wife's dogs, attached to her more. We call my female cocker my wife's velcro dog, but they have no problems with men. They both think they are lap dogs, they will try to get up on my lap when I am sitting in a chair.
We have had them since puppies and they are about 8 y/o now.
As for having cockers around children it is best just like any breed to get them when they are puppies and raise them with the children. Mine have been great with children and want to lick them to death and play. Cockers can be protective so as they are raised they will try to protect their owners, and that is their most aggressive traits.
You might want to go to a pet supply store and get a book about Cocker Spaniels, as there are a various breeds of the Spaniel. That is what I did before i bought my Cockers, that way I already had an idea of what they would be like and what to look for.

I had a black Cocker Spaniel when I was a kid. She was very high strung and nervous. She always peed on the floor when I first came home. I loved her and all but not sure if I would ever get another Cocker Spaniel.

i am glad u asked that! the answer would really depend on the kind of person u r or who else this dog would b around. but from personal experience when i was little our cocker spaniel attacked me and almost bit my nose completely off and he attacked my brother and swole his eye. this is no joke at all. they can b very aggresive but if u r a big firm and husky person who can discipline that type of dog-go 4 it but if u have children or are a child urself then NO THEY R NOT GOOD PETS 2 HAVE!

I had a giant at one point and he was fine as a pet. He didn't chew on anything and wasn't aggressive at all. He got along with my Husky and with my and my siblings. The only problem is he had seizures (which is normal to the breed) and he drooled a lot. But he was very intelligent and trained himself to wipe his mouth off before coming to us. I've had a few friends who have had cocker spaniels (Giants and non) and they love theirs as well. It just depends on what type of person you are and what personality type your dog is.

yes!!! i have a girl cocker spaniel and she is the cutest puppy ever. they are hard to train though since they are so hyper. people that say they are not good with kids are wrong i have a 5 year old daughter and a 3 year old little brother and my dog is super nice with them. i think if you mistreat your dog then of course they are going to want to bite but if you take care of them and play with them then they are going to be nice dogs. you just have to have time to play with them because they love attention!!

I got mine 11 years ago when he was 8 weeks old. His name is Beau. He is the greatest.
He is very smart and was very easy to train. He loves kids and he loves everybody except a guy I dated briefly that became sort of abusive. Then he became like a Pit Bull.
The only down side is the ears. Their ears get badly infected and this is a nightmare. If you get one there is home remedy that works great on their ears.

Only if you have plenty of time to exercise and play with them. They are hyper and tend to chew on everything. Think about which kind of dog you want because Cockers are very special and you don't want to make a wrong decision.

Bad character, cowards (like all dogs !), specially coward !, aggressive, ...
their is better out their ... choose carefully ... it is worth,
you will stay stuck some years with the guy so take time and even buy a book. Dogs tend to have characters according to the race, and the breeder so take your time and be happy plenty of years.
i took time, choose a dog that no one knew in the region i lived due to the charasteristics described in the book. i never had regrets. never. the descriptions that are in the books are quite reliable.
kindly

I think so. It depends on the owner and how well they are trained. My Dad has two golden cockers and they are just way to cute and sweet.

I wouldn't suggest getiing one if you have small children. They can be very aggressive. I had one about 15 years ago that was eating a t-bone. My boyfriend reached across him for the remote and she took a plug out of his nose. He still has several scars. He did manage to beat the mess out of her before going to the hospital though. He talked me into giving her away!
