Hardwood floors! Carpets contain all sorts of dirt, dander and filth no matter how often you clean or vaccum. They also are not not healthly for people because of the chemicals that seep into the air each time you step on them. If you don't wear shoes the oil from your feet stains and makes the carpet stink not to mention all the dead skin you are leaving behind.
Hardwood floors are easily maintained, wipe clean and don't absorb odors like carpets... any one who has an illness should not be exposed to carpeting. Carpeting also holds mold, mildew and tons of bacteria as an example if you have a cold and sneeze, your carpet holds on to the germs hardwood floors can't absorb it so it will wipe clean.

I prefer hardwood over carpet any day.
Hardwood is easier to keep clean. A swifter and two minuets and I'm done. Also if I want a carpet, I can use a nice throw rug. That way if I want to change the color of my room, I can quickly replace the throw rug and match the color I choose to use.
If I have wall to wall carpet, I'm locked into a color pallet and in some cases a design that I have to work around. Carpets are also very hard to keep really clean. Think about the amount of dust, pollen, ETC.
Hardwood is the only way to go.
Just my opinion.

Hardwood. Actually Laminate... (The fake stuff) Our old condo was hardwood and my dog completely scratched the heck out it. Our new house has Laminate flooring... part of the decision was it's durability. It holds up much better against the scratches. And if you get the better stuff it really does look as nice as hardwood. I hate carpets. I have a toddler and when I clean my floors I know they're clean! She's always on the floor and carpets never feel really clean. (Our basement is carpeted and our dog peed down there once in the middle and it's basically ruined. I can't get the spot out)

Hardwood floors are much better. We are in the process of ripping out our carpet and replacing it with wood floors. I pulled the carpet out of the hall today and I was shocked at how nasty it was underneath! I have a very good vacuum cleaner but it did not do as good a job as I thought it did. I have 2 rooms and a hallway left to rip the carpet out, and I can't wait to get rid of it.
Hardwood also adds value to your home. Carpet doesn't.

Hardwood floors are the easiest to take care of. They also help people with allergies. Most people like carpet because it is warm to step on in the winter months. I say....pick hardwood floors...they are low maintenance and look very nice...and you dont have to change them when you change your mind on motif(s).

I like hardwood floors in the common areas such as the living and dining rooms, but carpet in the bedrooms. Carpet just seems cozier to me, but hardwood is more elegant.

Hardwood flooring is more expensive to install and is colder, it wears better and can deepen in colour with age and u.v. light. Also better for allergens.
Carpet is warmer, cozier and a lot quieter and can still be easy to keep clean.
For my house I prefer carpet. Ceramic in the kitchen and bathroom, carpets elsewhere.

It depends on what you mean by better. If you're talking about value, then hardwoods currently return a higher resale value. If you're talking about limiting allergens, then again hardwood is better. If you re talking about comfort, or insulation value then carpet may be a better choice.

Oh by far hardwood floors. They add value to your home and can be an excellent feature when it comes time to sell.
