Just say thanks. He makes more money, he gives the gift. That's the unwritten law.

Not sure you really need to reciprocate. What this just a Christmas gift? Maybe it was your Christmas bonus for doing a great job! A thank you card is reciprocation enough!!

A simple Thank You is appropriate. You can always tell your manager how you used the $50 gift!

You don't reciprocate. He's the manager, your the employee. Boss gives employee gift as employee works hard to get boss more money.

You should rip it up, & throw it in his face because you realize that it is nothing but a cheap trick, perpetrated by "the man" in order to keep you smiling & in line to do his bidding! Then you should....OOPS! Sorry, that is for the other forum!
You should say thanks & you appreciate it! As a subordinate, you are not obligated to buy for your manager. But, if you also kind of have a good personal relationship with him, it is ok for you to get something less expensive for him.

Politely show your gratitude by saying, "thank you" and performing like a good employee the rest of next year.

I should hope it was in his pocket and not jammed down in his tighty-whities!
I'd send a nice thank-you note.

Write him a thank you note. You are not obligated to purchase a gift for someone just because they bought you one. Although, if someone passes a hat for a gift for your boss, please contribute.

You can simply say thank you - or get him a gift that is affordable to you.
