The appendix is usually on the right side, a few inches below the ribcage but above the hip in most people. If you're pregnant, the enlarged uterus can sometimes push the appendix up under the ribcage on the right side, so the appendix can move.
The symptoms of appendicitis vary with the time from onset. In the early stages with minimal to mild inflammation, there is generally a dull pain around the umbilicus (belly button). After some time which varies in people, the inflammation progresses and involves more of the peritoneum (lining of the abdomen) and the pain is then said to migrate to the right side, where most people know to be the location of their appendix. At this point, it will be a sharp pain in the right lower quadrant. If you or your doctor presses over this area, the muscles of the abdominal wall will sometimes tense up involuntarily--this is known as involuntary guarding and is a sign of inflammation of the peritoneum. If you push in deeply over the appendix and let go, the pain is worse when you let go--this is known as rebound tenderness. The pain is constant and gets worse with moving. If you jump up and down, the pain is sharp.
The main symptoms of acute appendicitis are right lower quadrant pain (or periumbilical pain), loss of appetite, and nausea/vomiting. A low grade fever is sometimes also present, but is not very high unless there is rupture. It is very important to get to the ER if you suspect appendicitis because the main risk is rupture, which then can potentially spread infection to the rest of the abdomen and be a serious infection. At that point often surgeons will not be able to operate on the appendix and instead will have to admit you for IV antibiotics for a few days. If caught early, appendicitis can be treated with surgery and you're home the next day eating icecream.
Good luck.

Your appendix is in the right side of your abdomen. The symptoms varies from person to person. Usually you will give right-sided abd pain and start running a fever. If your pain suddenly stops..your appendix has probably bursted...which will require immediate surgery to save your life! I suggest that you see your local doctor as soon as possible.

It's on the right side, as pain is concerned at least with me it was constant stabbing pain and if you press on the right side below your belly button fairly hard and it hurts pretty bad then it's your appendix. I actually just had mine out three days ago so I should know, it's pretty painful.

It's on your right side - one sure way to tell if you have an appendicitis is press on the painful area for 1-2 seconds, and quickly let go. If the pain worsens, see a doc asap.
