Will there be any differences in registering/insuring a car if I have a UK license instead of a US one? How long is it valid for before I have to take the US test? Can you own a car in your name without having a US license?

Your full UK license is valid for the duration of any temporary visit. You do NOT need an IDP; that just serves as a translation really and we do speak a similar tongue here. ;)

If you're taking up residency here you'll need to surrender your UK license for a state license in the state where you reside. You'll generally have 30 - 90 days to sort that out; the time depends upon state law though you won't encounter a lot of grief if you miss it by a few days as the rule is from when you became "ordinarily resident" in the particular state. Lots of room for interpretation there!

You can buy and insure a car with your UK license. Some states require proof of legal status to register your car; your visa will suffice for that.

I'd strongly recommend that you get an extract of your driving record from the DVLC before you leave the UK. And get copies of any NCB letters from your insurance company as well. Those will help to keep your insurance costs down on this side of the pond as well.

You'll have to take the written test and pass the eye exam in all US states. Some may waive the road test. Don't fret if they don't, the tests here are embarrassingly easy -- even if you failed 5 times in the UK, you will pass first time here. Unless you revert to driving on the left side of the road. ;)

Welcome to the US! (Sorry about what we pass off as "beer".)

I believe that your license is valid in the US by international treaty, however, if you don't an international drivers license is available inexpensively (here in the us by AAA). Yes you can own a car in your name without having a US license, otherwise, rental car companies wouldn't exist.

I think it depends on what state you're in, and for how long you are staying.
