Go with your gut instinct. It's not worth losing a friendship. Besides ask youself how you'd feel if the shoe was on the other foot and your buddy was going out with an ex of yours. You probably wouldn't like it either.

My advice is to ask him about it and tell him how much you like her. Respect his wishes, but if it's something you feel could really get you far, tell him. Dont' go behind his back, that would be the worst.
