Different people have different reasons, but I wonder what's the main attraction of keeping faith in imaginary deities. I'd like to think that it's a manifestation of an inate longing for supreme justice, but I think it's primarily just a fear of death...what do YOU think?

For the same reason people believe in Abe Lincoln or Elvis. There are eye witness accounts of both men and even some of the eye witnesses for Elvis are still alive. There are testimonies of actual contact with GOD as recorded in the Jewish scriptures and the New Testament. But it didn't stop there. GOD is alive in the life of those who choose him.

There has been much debate on the validity of the witnesses, but again this is of faith.

Did Elvis or Abe exist?

Because God makes himself relevant in my imaginary life time and time again, so I guess since my life is imaginary my God fits right in there why does that bother you? FYI faith is the opposite of fear...

I'd have to agree with your last thought, fear of death. I, personally, wouldn't mind an afterlife. But even if there isn't one and this life turns out to be the only and final one, then so be it.

It's not like you would miss being alive anyway. How can you miss it if you don't exist anymore?

You have to know all faiths to come to conclusion. I believe in god, but not because of fear. However i think, fear is the #1 reason for adhearant believers who preach to others.

One universal thing we all have in common is our survival instincts. I believe that our reluctance to accept our mortality is an extension of that. There is, therefore, in innate predisposition toward belief in anything that keeps us from dealing with it. It is only with education and logical reasoning, driven by a quest for genuine truth, that makes the 'no god' reality undeniable.

I think a fear of death and a fear of loss are among the largest reasons. My dad's ex-girlfriend is currently dying of lung cancer and she pulled me aside and said "Maybe religion doesn't work for you, but it's the belief that I will see my friends and family after I die that keeps me going every day."
Also, the idea of Heaven is a particularly nice one.

Man is born with an instinct to worship someone larger than they are. You know, someone to credit their existence to. The meaning of life in a sense.

I have no fear of death. I believe in God because He is. You are so sure there is no God, then why not give us some evidence. You can't because philosophy cannot prove God.
