You can spike it with whatever you want. Traditionally, rum and brandy are used. Recently, eggnog has made a comeback with butterscotch schnapps.
Whatever you use, have one for me.

Rum is the traditional liquor of choice to fortify your eggnog with. In times of old when everyone made their own, it all had rum in it. When they started mass producing it the rum was left out to gain greater distribution through grocery stores that could not sell liquor.

Eggnog is good with brandy,whiskey,scotch or what ever you prefer... try different combos to find your mecca. Southern comfort and root beer when mixed just right will taste like Dr.pepper enjoy !

You can use cognac, brandy, bourbon and dark rum together or seperately, and in my family we use amaretto...its a slightly different flavor, but it gives egg nog a touch of sweet almond.

Some people use rye, also, but I find it way too bitter!

I would use rum with eggnog. It tastes very good.

I like to spike it with Captain Morgan rum and then shave some fresh nutmeg in. You can also spike with whiskey.
