As a quick recap:
Absinthe can be poured many ways. The "classic" way is to set a sugar cube on a spoon, then set the spoon on the glass, and then slowly pour the absinthe over the soon. When your glass is 1/4 full, you light the alcohol soaked sugar cube and let the sugar caramelize (brown) slightly, before dumping it in your glass and mixing it in. AFTER you have mixed in the sugar, fill the rest of your glass with ice water (but no ice).
Those that don't cut their absinthe most likely have no taste buds (and are overly fond of either Johnny Depp or Moulin Rouge).

Now, with all that done, Absinthe should be savored. It should be sipped like a fine single malt scotch, or aged brandy. Absinthe is not intended to be mixed with anything (if you want that try "Ouzo"), nor is it meant to be taken as a shot. However: It's just booze. Take it like you want it.

There is a ritual for drinking absinthe that is part of the love and mystique associated with it:

Pour one once of absinthe into a glass. Place a slotted absinthe spoon over the glass and a sugar cube on top of the spoon, slowly pour iced water over the cube/spoon and let the sugar dissolve into the absinthe. the non soluble parts of the herbs like the anise and fennel will disperse giving it a cloudy/opaque look called a "louche" (pronounced Loosh) then drink and enjoy. for more info go to these websites:

there is alo an awesome article at wikipedia.org on the subject.

i love absinthe. believe it or not, it's made to be mixed, not drank straight. I've got a couple good recipes for you. ----> Call 911 2 oz Absinthe, 1 oz Triple Sec, Orange Juice, 2 Tsp Sugar. ----> Fairy Dust 1.5 Oz Absinthe, 1 oz Curacao Blue (love that stuff), Lime Juice, 2 Oz Red Bull (Oh Yeah) ----> Absinthe Frappe 1 oz Absinthe, .5 oz Curacao Blue, Splash Lemon Juice, 1 oz. Orange Juice Shake or stir, pour over ice. ----> Green Tear 1 oz Absinthe, 2 Oz Cranberry Juice, 1 Oz Tonic Water, Splash of Lemon Juice (My Fav) ----> Traffic Light 2 oz Cranberry Juice, 1 Oz Orange Juice, 1 Oz Absinthe. (yay) *general notes It's bitter, compliments lemon juice real well. So have some. And to take away it's hit, sugar is also a great idea. I like it with a splash of tonic and lemon juice and sugar, drinking it just like that, when i don't mix with the juices. Have fun! Oh yeah, you can add grenadine to any of those drinks 2 if you want, sweeten em up a lil more.

You have to do it in a ceremonial way with the slotted absinthe spoon and stacking sugar cubes on it. After pouring the absinthe over the sugar cube you light it on fire with a match and it goes aflame caramelizing the sugar cube and dripping into the absinthe at the bottom. It will go out after about six or seven seconds, if not just blow it out like a birthday candle. Fill glass with about 1/2 cup of ice water and it will glow. Slam it down, not to slow! and the green fairy will come out in you. Note 3 shot limit per night for safety's sake.

We made it the "traditional" way, with a slotted spoon and a sugar cube. You pour the absinthe over the sugar cube and let it dissolve into a glass with an ice cube. It tastes like sh** no matter how you drink it though!!!

I've only taken absinthe as a shot. I like to get it done and over with as soon as possible. Plus I can't imagine what would taste good with it as a mixed drink. good luck though =]

If you want to get trashed, shoot it. I think the traditional way is to pour it over like 1 ice cube.

I have a bottle, but can't drink it. It tastes like watered down Sambucca.

depends on how twisted you want to get. base liquors are normally used for miseddrinks then you have things like scotch that you drink straight up.

I recommend mixing unless you can handle the heat ;p
