I just got a puppy yesterday, and I was leary when they told me I could take it home, it was one of the runts of the litter, and they are 6 weeks old.

My puppy is 6 weeks old, and I thought it may just be too soon for her to be taken from the mother and litter.

The six week thing is really old time thinking. Pups need to be with mom for 10-12 weeks. Even after they are weaned she teaches them dog stuff.

A puppy needs to be winged from their mother before anyone should take them. The proper age to take a dog from their mother is 6weeks old, but ive seen it done at 4 and 5 before. The current owners of the puppies need to be slowly winging the puppies off of the mother. They should be fully dependent on puppy food by the time they are 6 weeks old. Also, when you feed the puppy its food you need to put warm water in the bowl, let it sit, then when it gets soggy, mash it up with a fork so there isnt any large chunky pieces for the new baby to choke on.

At least 8 weeks, you may want to wait until 12. If it's a good mother definitely wait until 12. They'll learn good habits. Especially that potty training thing. I left my Lab with his mother until 12 weeks and he was almost potty trained. We hardly had to do any work at all!

6 weeks is way too soon. You'll be taking that dog to obedience class.

6 weeks is the perfect age. Anything before that and your puppy isn't mature enough but anything after and the puppy is too attached to the mother and home. Have a good life with your new puppy!
Merry Christmas and Happy new year.

Between 8 to 12 weeks of age, is the recommended age, at earliest, to rehome puppies away from their mother and littermates.

All puppies should stay with the ***** (mother) until they are a minimum of six weeks. Some breeds require longer. The mother will let you know by pushing them away her self in attempts to wean them. When the pups teeth get to big their nursing causes the ***** pain as the pups begin to bite while nursing.
