I was a carpentry and masonry spc(21w or 51b) while i was in the army.I really enjoy doing it i did it for four years.Now that i am out the army what steps do i need to take to do it on the outside.I went to ait and i am certified for the army.

Union - find a local carpenters hall that needs members, best to look in areas where building is either continually strong or there is a boom (Vegas, Florida, Arizona...) Know that booms end though... They would make you an apprentice most likely but sometimes you'll be able to go straight to journeman if they are hard up enough for guys.

Own business / contracting - not sure... you would need some cash to get started and help/good advice from friends. This is the riskier option but if you are good and make the right choices it will pay off much bigger.

There is two routes you can do. You can sign on to one of the various infrastructure projects in Iraq or Afghanistan. Supposedly the pay is a huge.

In the U.S. the housing bubble is busting, but get into companies that do infrastructure projects (schools, bridges, dams) for the U.S. These might be the same companies.

dubberino is correct,but if you are against unions,contact contractors in your area. do some research about them. check their reputation.there are too many shady contractors out there.
