Find a quiet place for your dog to feel safe and secure whenever there are loud, scary noises. You might even play some soft music. It may relax your dog and also drown out some of the noise.

I have a greyhound who's afraid of thunder and the tranquilizers prescribed by the vet leave him really dopey on only half a dose so I don't use them.

I use Bach's Flower Essences, Rescue Remedy. It's natural, no side affects, just calms the dog enough, takes about 20 mins. to take affect. My dog is 70 lbs. and gets 4 drops. You can buy it at some drug stores, health stores or from a holistic vet. If you don't like using sedatives, that would definitely be worth a try.

For dogs that are really anxious-mild sedatives are sometimes unavoidable. Do you have a crate or indoor kennel? Try gradually introducing the crate by placing a fav blanket, toy, etc. Leave the door open-he doesn't have to be locked in. These can make him feel more secure because they create a den-like he would have in the wild. Most likely when he was a puppy someone probably accidentally reinforced his anxiousness to loud noises. He probably showed some fear and some one "comforted" him by petting him. Dogs thrive on positive feedback and negative behavior can be reinforced by accident. Good luck.
