You can encourage your toddler to use a spoon by offering a spoon around 12 or 13 months and showing them how to use it. Your toddler will model your behavior and soon after will develop this important milestone. Just remember that all toddlers develop at different times. Be encouraging and patient with your growing toddler. By 18 months, most will be able to use forks and spoons independantly. Good luck!

Alot of the learning is initiated by your child seeing your do daily tasks, such as eating with a fork, drinking out of a cup or with a straw. Of course, start with child utensils. As long as your child is eating "real" food and not eating baby food any more, it's time to start having them try to control their utensils! First feed them using the spoon or fork, making it very visible on how you use it. Then once they've ate enough, hand the spoon/fork over to them and let them try. When you start teaching them to drink from a cup or sippy, start with small amounts of juice or milk (don't make the cup too full). Demenstrate to them, at first, so they see how they are suppose to use it. Then hand the drink over to them, and let them try. Don't expect them to learn over night....they won't! My daughter has been eating with forks and spoons for almost a year now, and is just getting good at being able to actually keep the food on the spoon. Be patient. Alot of the time, a child will let you know when they are ready to start using "adult" things, cause they will want to use yours. Let them experiement and don't get upset when they spill or make a mess....it's all part of the learning experience. Good luck!

as soon as they can start to get the point that food goes on spoon, then spoon goes in mouth. (no forks for a while) It will get messy, but that is part of learning. I would try many times, until he/she understands the concept. good luck and have fun

as soon as you introduce solid foods (around 6 months). I gave my daughter a spoon to hold everytime she ate. When she started putting it to her mouth, I would out a little bit of whatever she was eating on the spoon. she could feed her self fairly well by 9 months, and now at 16mo. she completely feeds her self.

you know manners and prayers are never too early or late , i think when your kid looks at you he immediately understands that he too has to do that one day, i would say use these things everyday and he'll learn on his own without teaching him anything, my daughter is 22 month old and she already know how to use her fork spoon knife and napkins , the key is instead of teaching the kid make it a habit to use these things in a proper manner everyday and you'll see how quickly they pick up.

AS soon as you start feeding her baby food. Give her one of the little spoons to hold. Baby's naturally know what to do they are just not coordinated enough to do it. ( you know because they are always putting toys in their mouth when they are hungry or teething.) Eventually your baby will figure it out. You just have to give her the opportunity and a little bit of guidance.
