You could use a steam cleaner to get the deep down smells. There are formulas for steam cleaners made especially for houses with pets. Also, use deoderants for the carpet when vacuuming. Febreeze makes a formula for houses with pets, too.

first off make sure you keep your dog very clean, take him outside for a while and open all the windows to air out the house, if need be shampoo the carpets to give them a new clean smell. having air freshner plug ins in use should help a bit, however the "dog" smell never really goes away completely. You as an owner get used to it, its others that come over that really notice it. But thats the only down side of having a dog as they are the greatest, I had 2.

Give the dog regular baths with a good shampoo that isn't going to irritate his skin.
You can get the stuff by arm & hammer that is called pet fresh.....you sprinkle it on the carpet and vaccume it up. I use it daily and it helps break pet hair loose from the carpet.
Keep something like frabreeze to spray on the furnature.
Insences and Air freshners are great also.

You may try some of the carpet cleaners and powders but the truth is as long as you have a dog in the house the smell is inevitable. Interestingly we get used to the smell eventually but the guest notice the smell the moment they enter the house.
