Tonic is Gin's better half... the Salt to its Pepper... Robin to its Batman. Without Tonic, Gin's just a cranky old man, bitter and weary of the world. Tonic makes the edges soft and the colors bright.

Seriously?

It's Tonic Water, a mixer used in several cocktails.

Tonic water is a sweet carbonated non-alcoholic product that you can find at any liquor or grocery store. It is also called quinine water some times. It is good with Gin and very good with some Grey Goose or Ketel One Vodka. Look for Tonic Water in the same area as you would find other non-alcoholic mixers like sweet and sour, grenadine, or margarita mix and some stores put it on the shelf where you buy bottled water and club soda.

Tonic water is like a bittersweet carbonated water. Look for it in the mixers or soda pops at your local megamart. Or, go to a liquor store and ask them to set you up!

I've only ever heard that expression used in old Hollywood films, I think Humphrey Bogart used it in 'Casablanca'. 'Joint' is an old American slang term for a building or house used around the time of Prohibition when gangsters made millions distilling and sellling 'bathtub gin' to thirsty Americans denied legal access to proper proprietary products such as Gordon's. It seems a bit affected to use it use it now, but then 'cool' as an expression of approval is now (over) used sincerely whereas only about fifteen years ago in Britain at least, it was less common and meant ironically. 'Gin joint' is less embarrassing than 'cool' and is certainly less common, so less of a boring cliché.
