Sinuses become blocked because of swelling and inflammation caused by allergies, infections, or both. Antihistamines reduce inflammation caused by allergies. Claritin is one of the more popular antihistamines sold without a prescription. Benedryl is sometimes more efective than Claritin, but it causes drowsiness and it also dries the sinuses which can make the mucus too thick to drain. Inflammation is reduced by either Alleve or ibuprofen - Alleve lasts longer and is easier on the stomach. Lastly Mucinex is an expectorant that waters down the mucus and makes it drain easier. Many of the cold preparations contain all of these ingredients.
