Homework ensures that they are learning the material in school and gives them the extra practice with it. Messing around in school and not doing what you are suppose to do might seem fun for the mere instant but in the future it will be a long hard road with out the education that one needs to succeed in this world.

If the teacher is good, then s/he will only assign homework that has a point to it, not busy work.
Homework teaches independent study habits, which students will need when they get to higher grades and to college where a lot of work must be done outside the classroom.
Homework teaches responsibility. Homework is usually the first time a child is responsible to someone outside the home for something.
Homework helps reinforce the lessons that are being taught in the classroom so that they will sink in better for the child.
In general, homework should be about 10 minutes worth of work per year in school. (So, for example, my second grader should have about 20 mins worth of homework each night.)

Repetition/practice makes the information sink in. It's also really helpful for a student to have the confidence that they will remember the information AWAY from the classroom, to be sure they've really mastered it. When my kids do homework, especially math, I ask them to explain to me the steps they're taking to get to an answer - just as with proofreading a language assignment, this can help a student identify problem areas or weaknesses.

I only have one in school. I don't have a problem with him having homework on a daily basis. But I have three younger children, and I HATE that his teacher sends home things that he cannot possibly do on his own! I don't like it when she sends home things that require sisscors and glue either. I absolutely hate it when she sends so much that it takes him hours to finish it all! I'm a busy Mom. My second grader gets his "me" time at night, after my twins are in bed. I don't have a whole bunch of spare time, and I don't like wasting his "me" time to do homework. He's only 7, and I think homework, should be one or two sheets at most. Something that I can read him the directions to, and then he can sit and do it on his own. I'm not a second grade teacher, and there's a reason for that. I have my own job, and I work my rear end off to get it done everyday.

If you never did your homework then you would probably fail all your classes. Teachers do this to help improve your skills, and to help teach responsibilities. If you do finish your homework each and every night. then you will more than likely be a successfull person when you are older. If you get good grades, then you will get accepted into college, and get a good job. It all depends on what you want to be when you grow up, a looser, or a winner.

You want your kids to do their homework so they do good in school so they will grow up and do something with their lives. They need to be prepared for the real world.

I personally don't want my kids to do homework. I think home time should be home time, not homework time.
I have always encouraged my children to do their homework at school in their spare moments.
However, they know that I expect them to do, and hand in, ALL school assignments.
I know, I'm not normal. But my children bring home straight A's.
