Cain wasn't in the garden of Eden at that time. His parents had already been expelled. He killed his brother Abel and God cursed him to have to wander the earth. Cain was overwhelmed by that and feared being killed by others. God placed a mark on him that he couldn't cover up and that would make other people afraid to touch him.

There's no explanation for the mark.. you'll hear some really idiotic explanations like "He was turned into a dark-skinned person", but considering that they lived so close to the equator, they would've already HAD dark skin in order to survive the sun's uv rays.. it's called melanin. This stupidity is what has given white supremecists leverage in their racism.

In Jewish oral tradition, the mark was a horn or a pair of horns. When, later in Genesis, Lamech states that he has slain a man, the oral tradition maintains that Lamech slew a man who had himself killed his ancestor Cain. This would have been a mistake; the hunter having seen only Cain's horn (or horns) and mistaking him for an animal.

Again, the bible does not specify this. So, if you use it as your only source, then it remains a mystery.

The Lord put a mark upon Cain so that he would not be killed until he died a natural death. He found a wife and had children until he died. Genesis 4: 15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. Genesis 4: 16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. Genesis 4: 17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. The mark was a black mark on his head so all could see. This is also the mark of the beast. It is placed on their heads by an angel an example of the Lord marking some people is found in the following verses. Ezekiel 9: 3 And the glory of the God of Israel was gone up from the cherub, whereupon he was, to the threshold of the house. And he called to the man clothed with linen, which had the writer's inkhorn by his side; Ezekiel 9: 4 And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. 2 Peter 2: 13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;

Adam and Eve were driven out of the garden of Eden by God before they had Cain and Abel. So Cain was never in the garden. After Cain murdered his brother Abel, God confronted him and set a mark on him, but we are not told what the mark was. This is what happened to Cain.

Genesis 4:10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. 11 So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”
13 And Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear! 14 Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”

15 And the LORD said to him, “Therefore,[a] whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.

16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son—Enoch.

First of all Adam & Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden before they had any children.
Second Cain was marked with a dark skin so those who came upon him would know who he was and not kill him.

It isn't quite specific about the mark, but the mark was made so he couldn't be killed. Now, he also WASN'T CAST OUT OF EDEN. He was actually condemned by God. Or something of that sort.
