Technically, I don't think you can strengthen your lungs since they are not muscles. However, you can strengthen the diaphragm which is the muscle that does most of the legwork when it comes to breathing.

A lot of martial arts and Eastern fitness programs have good breathing exercises. Typically, these exercises have you take breaths by expanding your abdominal region as opposed to your chest so the work emphasis is on your diaphragm which is key to efficient breathing.

However, if your goal is to develop endurance and stamina, breathing exercises are just part of the solution. As other respondents have mentioned, you will also need to do some cardiovascular exercises in order to condition your heart and muscles for endurance when you exert yourself for extensive periods (e.g. jogging, swimming, etc.).

Definitely check with your doctor before you start a new workout program. And if you're new to these types of exercises, consult with a physical trainer who can get you started.

I am not sure what you mean by strengthen your lungs, but improving you over all fitness by weight loss (if needed) and exercise should improve you aerobic capacity. Aerobic capacity means the amount of time you ability to engage physical activity without having to stop due to shortness of breath.

cardio.

also, I recommend yoga, as it will help improve your posture. though this does not strengthen your lungs, it makes breathing easier, since proper posture creates more room in your chest cavity into which your lungs can expand.
