Because it's a nice way of saying going to bed with someone... If you really lucky, you will fall asleep in their arms and wake up in the same position and crack on again!

Merry Christmas.

It's cos us Brits are so stuck up in our victorian ways we are imbarrassed to say sex (unless ure a doctor) the same as us snobby comformist brits would not dare step out of line from what everybody else does & break a convention.

In the uk We are also afraid we might offend someone,(especially old people) if we mention the names of the male & female genitals eg: penus, vagina, **** brests, bottom, clitoris, sperm , womb etc.

The one convention in the uk which i detest the most which is applicable to men more than women is during the summer months when it is hot, is the unwritten convention that says men must always wear a t shirt in public places.

I SOD THIS & WALK AROUND BUSY HIGH STREETS WITH NO T SHIRT ON, WHILE EVERY BODY ELSE SWEATS.
I would encourage the rest of Britian to do the same this summer May 2007 onwards.

I CHALLENGE YOU, TO STRIVE TO BE DIFFERENT.

I sleep with the opposite sex. It's just because in the 50's when sex was "taboo", they'd say they "slept" together. Because its what happens in the bedroom. Nowadays, saying "we f*ck all the time" is more accepted, but i like the politeness and the dignity in "we slept together."

And yes, you end up in one anothers arms. sleeping. Well, i do anyway.

Often the sleeping comes afterward, but I think that term began simply because sex often (for a lot of people anyway) occurs in bed, where sleep also occurs...

it"s an euphemism. A figure of speech. There was a time in the U.S. when we did not talk directly about sex. This is a carry over from that.

Well, I would imagine if you had the opportunity for a "sleep over" then you would eventually end the evening sleeping in eachother's arms.

Heheh. Also, why do we say sleeping with someone when sleeping means bed and sometimes you dont have that person on a bed?

to be tactful. Then you don't have to feel like anyone is invading your privacy that way...I don't know I guess it is a little more gentlemen like to say I slept with her as opposed to saying well I banged her or something like that.

Probably because about ten seconds after the job is done most of us blokes are on our backs snoring away.
