Rinse a bunch of soda cans, put ten pennies in them and tape over the hole. Set a 'trap' for your dog by baiting the trash with something really yummy then balancing the cans in such a way that they will tumble down all over if he gets into the trash. Having this happen a few times will cure most dogs of rummaging in the trash.
You could also get a tall kitchen waste can with a flip up lid. This was all it took to keep my husky wolf out of the trash.

Bitter apple on the garbage can, or place it in an area the dog can't get to. There may be something in there occasionally that drives em crazy! Check the contents when your dog gets into the garbage and see what it may be, dispose of this somewhere else if it is one specific thing that the dog goes for. It would be hard to "punish" your dog for this cause you don't catch him in the act.

I reccomand caging him while your away if your that worried about it or just bring him over to the garbage show him it and tell him no but useally telling them no dont work unless you do it right after they do somthing or while there thinking about doing it

he does it for pleasure, he's bored...my friend has a similar problem, and her dog kept on eating out of her bathroom garbage can, so she closed the door and let him get it our of his system, and it worked! He never went through the trash again, maybe you should try it!
Good Luck!

Depending on the size of the dog, you can use a puppy or regular baby gate to keep them out of the room where the can is. Put the can where he can't reach it or use a crate.

Dogs are scavenger's and animals of opportunity... Your never going to keep the dog out of the trash. You need to move the trash so the dog cant get it.

when you leave your pet alone it will go into a depressed state. It will try anything to amuse itself.Try leaveing a radio or tv on.You could have a lifesize model of yourself made. This is extreme but has worked for a number of people. If you consider this you can contact me at gwb81@yahoo.com I have made many of these models they work well. The cost is usually not very much.

Put the trash out of his reach. In the garage, or on a counter.
