You probably don't. The question you must ask yourself is, "is it really necessary that I know?"

Some people ask questions that about matters the other person feels are private or do not wish to share with the questioner.

Unless it is essential for you to know it is better to avoid asking personal questions unless you know the person really well and they readily share personal information with you already.
