"I thought to myself, "Look, I have grown and increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge." Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind. For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief. (Ecclesiastes 1:16-18)

With wisdom comes sorrow, due to the fact that this wisdom changes you and being changed when you gaze upon the previous things which you, when you were ignorant, felt genuine, now having wisdom you see the folly in it all - you see the error. With knowledge you can't go back to former things but now you are made to be condemned by what you know if you don’t live up to it. Things appear as they are; your prospective has shifted changing your whole reality that you perceive. And all you have is the memories of before where you were without this enlightenment, where you could do the things which you did not understand its implications, live in foolishness. Much like being drunk, while you were drunk you could fit in with the other drunkeners and be marry in a quagmire of ignorance. After becoming sober, shaking off the intoxication of this world, off the mindset of it and being able to clearly see the condition of those who are drunk and see the world as it is, much pain comes because now your an outcast and won't be accepted even though you can help them to become sober. There will be instant rejection and you moving amongst the people causes you much pain seeing them as the walking dead. Walking graves to blind to see.

Now seeing it is a testimony to you of the pain and struggle, the utter vanity of it all continues to hunt you. And you can't go back to former times, ignorance which being like a sort of emptiness, once you recognize that lack and fill it then there is no way to undo what you have become awakened to. No going back to former things or our conscience will challenge us. Our conscience makes us slaves to what we know. And all of this is why sin is knowledge not lived, not applying what you know, what constitutes wisdom.

It is a painful reminder daily to see everything, discern everything, and measure everything to this new vision in regards to where you are at now, in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. And as well as this, what you gain by your knowledge will be loss in this world, what you construct by your wisdom will be brought down in this world, it is all transitory and meaningless in the end.

And in the end what does one have to show for it? The man in Ecclesiastes says everything built upon in this world, all traces of knowledge and wisdom is made to naught or will be so. Because it will end when you die and what you thought you had of this world will fade away.

(trying to sound poetic - I love Solomon's sayings, or this representation).

A secret would be kept from you technically because it would hurt you. They said it's better to be kept an ignorant than know where the light is and realized that darkness surrounds it.

If a husband cheats on a wife, he would try to keep it a secret. When the wife finds out, you know what follows, right?

You thought you were doing a great job, then they found a mistake that lost the company tons of money, then the consequences,...

Use that words of wisdom as applicable (not on all events).

Increasing knowledge and wisdom bring greater understanding of God's holiness in contrast to our sinfulness. This understanding causes great sorrow.

The more you learn the truth about the world, the more you're going to be upset that no one else sees what you see going on in the world.

That means I may have an idea what you are talking about.

ever heard the saying "ignorance is bliss?"

this is saying the same thing in reverse.

only the ignorant see the world as black and white. People with knowledge know its many shades of Grey. That results in stress because its much easier just to label things as good and bad and take that stance.

Yes, I do.

We can learn through joy, but the greatest of questions, the most significant learning we do, is through sorrow and suffering. To quote from the Wiccan wine blessing...

"To learn you must suffer."

Nothing worthwhile ever comes without some kind of price-tag.

With wisdom; comes compassion. When you are compassionate; you feel sorry for others that come into your life.
