I know some churches are more traditional with the old time hymns like The Old Rugged cross and Amazing grace, but lately in the past 20 years I have seen a change woships teams have singers, drums elelctic guitars and the music is more comtemporay. The words of the hymns are beatuiful but I dont always like singing them because to me the hymns sound all a like in rythym beat and method and they all seem to be in the same time signature, I like singing the comtemporary because I can harmonize with the music and it feels very deep to me. How can I have a love and passions of the hymns of old because they do express true christianity? Please forgive me but the hymns seems a little boring to me. What can I do to have a passion for different types of music that promotes Jesus Christ and how can I use the comptemoray music I enjoy to give Praise Honor glory and joy to my father in heaven. I have been sining for many years and want to use my voice to glorify God forever and always.

YES! I agree and I feel like that is why a lot of churches are seeing people leaving... We need to get back to the classics and also turn down the volume of the stage performers so that the voices of the believers' praise can be heard and draw others into the communion it gives. God dwells in the praises of His believers!

When you open up your hymnal, take a look at the date that these hymns were written. Now picture yourself singing with every single person that has sung that song since the time it was written, churches everywhere bringing God the glory He deserves. Pretty cool feeling, and the more ancient, the better. Drums and guitars and fancy sound systems are great, but words and music should be brought together in equal importance in the worship of the Lord.

Check out "Alive Forever" by Travis Cotrell. It is a praise and worship CD that contains some beautiful hymns on it and is one a the best CD's I have ever heard. It also has contemporary songs on it.

Hymns are really good because they preach a mesage. They have powerful words to tell about Jesus and to encourage our heart. They are thought provoking and really remind me about what God has done for us. Music isn't the most important part. It's the words that have the message. I enjoy the tune to old hymns myself also. "A mighty fortress is our God" or "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" are wonderful hymns.

It doesn't matter what type of music it is; if it helps you worship the Lord, it's good. Our church has taken the words from some of the old traditional hymns and given them a more contemporary sound. Don't feel guilty about not liking the dragging sound of the old hymns. Some people love them and some don't. There is nothing sacred about the songs themselves.

I prefer hymns over contemporary praise music. I think for me, I came to appreciate the hymns more after I started reading about the history surrounding a particular hymn. Who it was written by? When? That type of thing...
I find myself inspired by the knowledge that generations upon generations has worshiped with this song.

My feelings toward contemporary Christian music vs the old hymns are just about the opposite of yours (maybe that's because I'm a baby boomer). I think the lyrics of most contemporary Christian tunes are lame, and the melodies of most of them are uninteresting and forgettable. The hymns, in contrast, are deeply moving to me. But, of course, I'm in a minority among Christians in my musical preference. But there's room in the body of Christ for all different styles of music.

Just remember to embrace the new, but cherish the past. While it may be easier to get into the spirit of worship with new songs, know in yourself that the hymns are to be used for worship as well.

Our worship band learned the hymns, but most of the band members have played in secular bands (usually heavy metal). So, when they do a hymn, it's spruced up with a modern, heavy sound. It's really cool, but disappointing because you can't get CDs or Mp3s of their versions. They really do rock!

We all have a different worship style. Some like the traditional (my mom's style,) contemporary (more my style) and then there's fuel...which is contemporary with "kick" (lots of guitar and drums.

As long as what music style you love, praises God...that's what He wants!

Merry Christmas!
