If I was a clerk at a hotel and some idiot did that I think I would probably laugh him right out of the lobby.

Of course not, this is silly. "On the origin of species" is not the "holy book" of atheists. It is just the first draft of a scientific theory that is supported by overwhelming evidence.
By the way I am atheist and I have a Bible and a Quran at home, but no "On the origin of species". I have read about the theory of evolution, but that were books that are more up to date than Darwin's original book.

Highly unlikely. The Bible is a religous text, Darwin wrote works of science. The two are not in the same category. Besides, atheists generally travel with something to read.

There is no inherent correlation between Darwin's theories and Atheism. An Atheist need not ever have heard of Darwin's theories, or, if he did, give them any credence. The continuously displayed ignorance of Atheism by christians on this site is appalling.

Nope. No-one forces us to look at it. Besides, Motel 6 is a private enterprise. If the government were to do it, it'd be wrong and need to be stopped.

How fun! Your Christian respondents all seem to think that we complain about this kind of thing, and that's why they think we're intolerant - despite the fact that the atheist respondents DIDN'T complain about it. Witness the central role of fiction in the right-wing Christian belief system.

How about that, Christians? You really blew it here, didn't you? Good one, Jimbo. You flushed 'em out into the open nicely with this question.

No. They're donated by private groups that aren't publicly funded, and Motel 6 is not a government agency. If we really felt strongly about having Darwin's literature in motel rooms, we'd buy copies and donate them. The vast majority of us are staunch supporters of religious freedom. We just don't want our government favoring one religion or moral philosophy over all others and using our money to proselytize.

I've thought about it that it might be fun, but then since most motels and hotels generally might not care (if they're not sponsored by a religious group, of course, unlike the ones sponsored by Mormon $$) so I let it drop. My particular irritation was in the absence of a Q'uran and other holy books but you've got a good point.

No, we find the bible rather amusing. It's like watching "Plan 9 for Outer Space", so bad but so funny. Especially the OT. But the best was when I was in Utah and had a copy of the book of Mormon in my room, now that's humor!

I accept the fact of evolution but I wouldn't want any book by Darwin in a hotel room-in spite of his excellent scientific insights his books are too intense for light reading.

I'm sure atheists do complain. They don't have to go to Motel 6. It's their choice. Just like it's the motel's choice to leave a Bible.
