I have a one year old Yellow Lab/Shar pei mix. He is alot more lab than Shar pei and acts it too. He is really hyper. I need help training him not to jump on people. Its like he gets so excited to see people. I have tried everything from poping him on the nose to stepping on his back feet, to telling him no.. Nothing seems to work. I know there must be a better solution. Any suggestions?

One of my Rotts was like that and when you have a large dog this can be quiet a problem. I took him to school and the teacher said when he comes up to you and you know he is going to jump on you just raise your knee. (not fast or hard or with any force) but just rasie your knee, thier chest will hit your knee and they will not like it. This did work after some time with him! He dose not jump on anyone now!! Let me tell you though a few times he almost knock me over Ha ha Hope this helps!

It kinda sucks, but the best way to stop it is to ignore him. Let him jump but don't give him an ounce of attention until he sits and he will get the idea fairly quick. Other than that there isn't much you can do. It does work though, cuz like I've said in answers before 5-10 min of "no attention" time feels like a lifetime to a pup.

I've always given my dogs the Knee in the Chest move when they jump. Jumping is also a sign that he thinks he's higher up in the pecking order. When he jumps, face him square on and bring your knee up quickly. This prevents him from making contact with you, saves your clothes and does cause some mild discomfort. That coupled with a sharp "NO" will end the habit.

Dogs are pack animals. Have you established that you are alpha dog? I suggest you get a good book on dog training. Start with training on the leash. Unfortunatly many people wait till their dogs are too old to teach new tricks but there is still hope. When teaching him to walk on a leash, you don't let him lead you. You walk, he walks, you stop, he stops, he stays by your side at all times. If you are in the habit of letting him run around while you meekly follow along trying to keep hold of the leash, then this dog is in control and you need to establish who is alpha dog. YOU. When he tries to run or walk away from your side, stop, say no, pull him back to your side (usually your right if you are right handed) say good boy then walk again, stop the minute he tries to go ahead of you. Always keep him in control. When training them not to jump....the minute you see him ready to jump, bring up your knee into his chest and knock him over. Do this each and every time he jumps on you, always saying "no" sternly. You need to teach him to sit as well. I've found this best accomplished with treats. Don't give the treat till they sit. Say sit. If he doesn't sit, push his butt down to the ground then give the treat and say good boy. He will get the hang of it eventually. If he bites your fingers when taking the treat this too is a bad habit and should be dealt with. They should very gingerly take the treat from your fingers and will after time if you take back the treat if they snap at it. Once you have told a dog to sit, "allow" him to get up by saying "come". A dog is a big responsibility just like a child. IT takes time to teach and most people are not willing to invest the time. It sounds like you are so good luck.

IGNORE HIM!! It sounds odd, but even if you're yelling "NO" at him, you're still giving him attention. Shove him off of you and ignore him, don't look at him, don't talk to him, walk away and ignore him. Praise him when he doesn't jump. If that doesn't work, they make a harness that will keep him from jumping, you can get it at Petco or where ever, use it as a training tool and then you can get rid of it afterwards. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK. GET MEAN! I worked with a bunch of labs at the shelter where I work. You know hes going to jump on you so when he does, shove him right off of you and ignore him. Eventually he should figure out that jumping only gets him "laid out flat on his back" and ignored!

I had a Setter who would jump up to greet you and knock you down. The vet suggested this solution and it cured the dog in a matter of days. He said to keep handy a small mug of water and dump it on the dog´s head every time it jumped up to greet. It worked. In days the dog just stopped jumping on people.

gently step on it's back feet when it jumps up. Gently, not stop and hurt the poor thing. This worked well with my hyper hound mix.

When my dog would jump, we'd bring our knee up to meet his chest. He stopped eventually. It didn't hurt him.
