Rome's answer to Jesus.
A warrior's version of a sun god. Most of Rome's active-duty soldiers were Mithraists.
Always did a vivid picture of their "baptismal" ritual. Standing in a pit having an ox 's throat slit above you and allowing all the blood to flow over you. Musta been smelly and sticky, but memorable.

As an atheist, I try to correct this common misperception that Christians somehow stole a pagan holiday and made it into Christmas. It's important to understand that all religions, when they spread, intentionally use existing rituals and concepts as a platform to present their teachings. Christianity did it with existing pagan traditions. Buddhism did it as well.
