Dan Brown himself said it was a work of fiction.

Question asked of Dan Brown in an interview (from his own website):
HOW MUCH OF THIS NOVEL IS TRUE?
The Da Vinci Code is a novel and therefore a work of fiction. While the book's characters and their actions are obviously not real, the artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals depicted in this novel all exist (for example, Leonardo Da Vinci's paintings, the Gnostic Gospels, Hieros Gamos, etc.). These real elements are interpreted and debated by fictional characters. While it is my belief that some of the theories discussed by these characters may have merit, each individual reader must explore these characters' viewpoints and come to his or her own interpretations. My hope in writing this novel was that the story would serve as a catalyst and a springboard for people to discuss the important topics of faith, religion, and history.

BTW, how would Leonardo DaVinci know who was at the Last Supper?

It's just a novel, but a thought provoking one. Unfortunately, there is a mixture of fact and fiction in that work which makes it hard to know what to believe. But, like everyone is saying, there are tons of books about it like "Beyond the Da Vinci Code".

Still, there probably is a bloodline of Jesus Christ running around somewhere as Jesus had 3 brothers and 2 sisters and I doubt if all of them were childless.

Dan Brown himself states that this is a fictional work. I believe, however, that there are people and groups that believe a lot in the book is true. Such as Jesus being married and having children.

I imagine there is a TON of research out there if you ever wanted to explore the idea.

No. That is a fiction novel. I did watch the movie because I've been to Paris and in the seen the Mona Lisa. I just wanted to see it again. It was a good mystery although other than DeVinci and Jesus existing the rest was fiction.

It amazes me how many people can't accept the fact that Jesus did not get involved with women. People in bible times didn't get married til they were in their 30's. Not 18. He was a serious man and only here for a short time and for a purpose "to do his fathers will". Not to get married and have kids. I think it's because the world is so sex crazed, that they can't believe that anyone could go without sex for 33 1/2 years. If he didn't get with a woman, he must have been gay???? Why is everything based on sex????

The book states on the first page that it is a work of fiction. If I told you that I was going to read you a story about unicorns, would you exclaim, "You are a liar!" at the end of it?

Conversely, the scientology "religion" that so many rich people seem to migrate towards was written by a science fiction author, L. Ron Hubbard. So there is really no stopping people's gullibility.

Dan Brown's book is fiction with some historical elements, which he has interpretted in such a way as to make his fictional novel appealing to the masses.

I'm not saying it couldn't be true. There's just no way for us to find that out now and Dan Brown's book is not meant to be taken as non-fiction.

Well it depends.. if you like "truthiness" as defined by Stephen Colbert, you could ask if it "feels right", regardless of the facts.

Fact: There is no historical evidence that Jesus ever existed.
But, when has that stopped people from believing in him?

There are definite historical facts in the book.. the symbolism of the pentacle, goddess worship, etc.. those are true.

I think the choice is yours to believe what you want. If you want to believe in theories that have existed since before Dan Brown's book, go for it.
If you want to believe that Jesus is God, go for it.
No one can force you to believe something.. that's a choice you get to make.
The problem with not knowing what to believe is what you do with it. It's going to require that you research for yourself until you are satisfied with an answer.
Good luck in your search :)

It depends on what side of view you are. Well, if you'll ask my opinion, I would rather advice you not to believe "all" what was written in his book, or if you watch the film, do not be confused of it. It was a total blasphemny. How could Jesus be married to Mary? But I do respect the thoughts of Mr. Brown. He has all the freedom to believe in, and he scribbled it, and eventually was given life through the film. That's how powerful pen and words are. But, bro. your faith is far better off than what I had mentioned earlier. Only your firm belief and stand can hold you in your understanding, no one can convince or change your view. But if we will base the entire story to what the Bible says, Jesus died at the age of 33, and there was no mention that he was married before he died. So, if you strongly believed in the HOLY WORD OF GOD, there must be no room for you to doubt or be confused at all what any man will claim, because we have many of those who claimed to be of great power, influence, even false prophets in the guise of influential and well-respected people. But be aware, for by their fruits you will know them. Good luck bro.

That book is completely a fictional novel. No matter what he says in it, it's fiction. The "Series of Unfortunate Events" claims that everything it says it true, but it's not because it was written to entertain. It's fiction. The "Da Vinci Code" is also fiction and whatever it says about Jesus is not fact or even based on fact. It's fiction, it's an interesting fairy tale, but it's fiction.

Fiction is the one that means 'not true.' Just clarifying for you =).
