Any time a foreign object is placed in the body there is risk of infection. Make sure you go to a reputable establishment and ask how they steralize their instruments. They should be auto claved and if they tell you anything other than that go somewhere else. There is also the pain associated with it. And the rumor that piercing the tongue in the wrong way can cause paralysis is true. A good technician knows how to avoid the nerves that can cause damage.

Side affects? other than a sore tongue, most guys with think that you are promiscuous, and really in to oral sex, most empoyers will be less likely to hire you, people will be less likely to take you seriously, and you will talk funny. if you don't mind that, the other issue is that it could get infected, causing all kinds of problems.
I would have to ask you one simple question:
Are you doing this because you WANT to, OR because someone else has one, or simply because it is "cool".
Stop, think for yourself, and the decide if it is really something for you

The more you want to be different, the more you end up the same as everyone else.

(i.e. EVERYONE is always trying to be different)

If you want a job that pays more than $9.50/hr, then I'd skip the tongue ring. This is one of those youth moments you'll regret in about 10 years. Do yourself a favor and don't bother.

As a former dental lab tech, the dental profession would love you to. The tongue almost never stops moving and that constant tapping fractures the anterior (front) teeth within a few years and they end up needing crowns or partial dentures pretty quickly. Tongue jewelry is the best thing that has happened to dentistry since the development of dentures!!!!

What brains you have left will leak out of your head. Most people look down on those with multiple piercings, makes it harder to get a job or get taken seriously anywhere but the entertainment or sex industry.
