And Shermy, I agree with you. It is grossly unfair to subject these poor people to 3 tours of duty there. My neighbors husband is there now. She's going to have a baby alone in two weeks. :(

Pika is going for conscientious objector status. And just in case, Pika is going to declare that she/he is a GAY little pokemon.

I don't think a draft is "imminent", no. Would have to get approved by Congress first, and right now Congress has just been taken by the Democrats firstly, and furthermore there was one Dem senator who floated this idea again recently, as he does every year, and it got shot to hell again (as it does every year). So, I think it would take a hell of a lot for that to happen. I wouldn't worry about it. If they think they've had "mounting disapproval" of this whole ongoing Iraqi... "war" or occupation more precisely (the President did declare the war over, and the "mission accomplished" back when he did his little stunt landing on the Naval carrier) , let them try re-instituting a draft...... THEN they'll see "growing disapproval". We're talking tension and uprisings like you haven't seen since the late 60's. A very similar situation would develop here as the average people grow more and more angry and full of unrest . It's a horrible idea, and I think everyone realizes that.

Man, I'm glad I'm 45 and not 25. Bush has put us in a lose-lose situation here.

Frankly, I think that if we don't dramatically increase the number of personnel there it'll go on forever. If we withdraw, it'll be a bloodbath. If we do dramatically increase the numbers, we'll have to draft 'em.

You can bet that the Republicans are praying that the Democrats force a troop withdrawal so they they can blame the results on the Dems. If this thing causes a draft, the Republicans won't win another election in my lifetime.

There is no point to even have this mechanism. If we are in a war and need more troops and no one is willing to volunteer, then I guess our citizens aren't that interested in winning the war. You would only need a draft for an illegitimate war, i.e. one which our people oppose anyway, so it shouldn't be fought.

Period. No one needs a draft machine.

We either have to get out or reinstate the draft. People in the reserves are serving 3 tours! No one in their right mind is volunteering. What do you think?

As a child of the 60's and Viet Nam( my brother went twice), I will fight the draft in any way possible.

Sounds to me like they are "testing" to see how resistant the American people are to the idea.

I want out of Iraq now. I'm very resistant.

EDIT: Oh, and BTW, I'm a Christian.

Conscription can be implemented at any time. No "testing", no debate, no majority opinion needed. You're drafted.

Just a few more years and I won't have to worry about that nonsense.
